Orthaspidotherium and Gobiatherium compared for the first time
As suggested
by the large reptile tree (LRT, 2324 taxa) late Paleocene Orthaspidotherium bears on overlooked resemblance to Mid Eocene Gobiatherium (Fig 1). The missing nose bones of Orthaspidotherium could inflated… could have an ascending process dividing the nares… or not. The mandible and post-crania is missing in both taxa.

Orthaspidotherium edwardsi
(Ladeveze et al. 2010; Late Paleocene, 58 mya, 7.5cm skull length) nests with Meniscotherium. The skull is twice as wide as tall on this weasel-like terrestrial mammal. The jawline is convex at the canine and beneath the orbit. The lacrimal/jugal/zygomatic arch is quite robust.
Gobiatherium mirificum
(Osborn and Granger 1932; middle Eocene) is widely considered a distinct type of uintathere, like Uintatherium. Here it nests with Arsinoitherium. Gobiatherium has a long wide skull and no horns. Only Arsinoitherium and Gobiatherium: redevelop the ascending process of the premaxilla, completely enclosing the naris; produce a wide, elevated set of nasals, further expanding into horns in Arsinoitherium; only two molars, rare among placentals; and no other condylarths have a wide flat cranium, usually a crest or a convex cranium is present.
Tomorrow this story expands.
