Terror bird phylogeny cherry picks wrong outgroup taxon again

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

LaBarge, Gardner and Organ’s 2024 paper on terror bird
phylogeny followed tradition in cherry-picking the long-legged South American seriema, Cariama, for their outgroup taxon, rather than the LRT tested, similar, but different enough, long-legged African secretary bird, Sagittarius (Figs 1, 2).

Cariama turns out to be ancestral to the flamingo,
Phoenicopterus, a genus found on both hemispheres.

Following outdated phylogenies will get you published.
Finding phylogenies that are outdated will get you ostracized.

Run a test yourself to find out which taxon is basal to the terror birds.
