Chicago Cubs get top-5 ranking for performance this season, given expected trade deadline prediction
The Chicago Cubs are 29-20 on the season following their fourth consecutive loss on Tuesday night. After falling to the Milwaukee Brewers by the score of 5-2, the Cubs slipped out of first place in the National League Central Division. They now sit in third place behind the Brewers and St. Louis Cardinals.
As frustrating as the last four games have been, though, the Cubs have had a solid season overall. They have already rattled off two different 10-game winning streaks and appear poised to be competitive in the division all year long.
But as the season goes on, they are going to need to add some starting pitching.
The Chicago Cubs are predicted to be buyers at the MLB trade deadline
Many analysts and experts predicted the Cubs to win the National League Central. It is no surprise to them, therefore, that Chicago is in the thick of the race this season.
Jim Bowden of The Athletic ranked the Cubs’ performance this season as the fourth-best in baseball, but unsurprisingly insists that they need to add starting pitching ahead of the MLB trade deadline:
“I picked the Cubs to win the NL Central, so I’m not surprised they’re playing well. They’ve gotten off to a hot start despite a deluge of injuries, including to two of their best starting pitchers, Cade Horton and Matthew Boyd, and a setback in the rehab of lefty Justin Steele.
“They are making it work because the Cubs are one of the best defensive teams in the game and their lineup top to bottom gives professional at-bats every day and the lineup length is special.
“Trade deadline position: Buyers. Chicago is already making phone calls regarding starting pitching help, and I would expect between now and the trade deadline they land a starter because they have the prospects to make a deal.”
Shota Imanaga had been Chicago’s most reliable pitcher so far this season, but he gave up eight runs against the Brewers in his last start. Ben Brown, too, was hung with the loss against Milwaukee on Tuesday.
With all the injuries their starters have suffered this year, there is no way the Cubs can compete into the fall with the rotation they currently have.
