Chicago White Sox reconstruct lineup in aftermath of Miguel Vargas X-rays
The Chicago White Sox had a scary moment on Tuesday night amid a comeback 2-1 win over the Seattle Mariners.
Miguel Vargas was hit in the wrist by a 95.1 MPH fastball. The third baseman needed X-rays after the contest to determine the severity of the injury.
Per Brooke Fletcher of CHSN, White Sox manager Will Venable revealed that Vargas’ X-rays came back negative.
Chicago does not intend to start him against the Mariners on Wednesday to close out the series, though he could come off the bench to pinch-hit on Wednesday if the offense needs a spark. The White Sox were planning on giving Vargas a rest day eventually, so Game 3 of the current series will work for that duty.
However, Vargas is dealing with bruising on his right palm.
“Just talked with Miguel,” Fletcher posted on X. “There’s some bruising on that right palm. Thought it was worse in the moment but he said he woke up and felt great. He’s thankful everything came back negative.”
Vargas, 26, has been a key piece of the suddenly-hot offense for Chicago. He’s batting .237 with 11 home runs and 29 RBIs this season.
The White Sox will shake some things up on defense on Wednesday.
Chicago White Sox change the lineup
With Vargas out of the starting lineup, the White Sox plan to turn to Colson Montgomery to start at third base. Center fielder Luisangel Acuna will get the start at shortstop.
Acuna is batting .172 with three RBIs this season, he will head to the bottom of the batting order on Wednesday.
The White Sox enter Wednesday with a chance to win the series over the Mariners. Chicago is two games back from the Cleveland Guardians for first place in the American League Central. The White Sox have a two-game lead over the Texas Rangers for the final wild-card spot and a three-game lead on Seattle.
The White Sox have a chance to put some distance on the Mariners with a win in Game 3 on Wednesday before starting a three-game series on the road against the San Francisco Giants on Friday.
