Cubs expected to complete this one massive MLB trade deadline move

The Chicago Cubs are absolutely reeling right now, as they were just swept by the Milwaukee Brewers and have lost nine of their last 11 games. A litany of problems are affecting the team at the moment, but starting pitching seems to be their most significant bugaboo.

Considering the Cubs’ rotation has been absolutely ravaged by injuries over the first couple of months of the season, that should not come as too much of a surprise, but they need to find answers, and fast.

The good news for Chicago is that there should be a handful of impactful starters available between now and the MLB trade deadline, so the Cubs will certainly have chances to add at least one hurler to their pitching staff.

The question is, who will Chicago acquire? And how much will it have to give up?

Well, the Cubs already snatched one Miami Marlins pitcher over the winter, landing Edward Cabrera in a trade that sent Owen Caissie to South Beach. Could they revisit the Marlins well again? Bleacher Report’s Zachary D. Rymer thinks so.

Chicago Cubs predicted to trade for Sandy Alcantara

In a piece where Rymer ran down some fresh trade deadline predictions, he projected Alcantara to be dealt to Chicago.

The Cubs expressed interest in Alcantara last summer, but Miami opted to hold on to him. That was probably a wise move on the part of the Marlins, considering that Alcantara struggled mightily during the first half of 2025 in his first year back from Tommy John surgery and didn’t quite possess the value he has now.

And while he former unanimous NL Cy Young award winner hasn’t completely regained his old form, he is at least back to being really good, owning a 3.53 ERA over his first 10 starts of the season.

Alcantara is earning $17.3 million this season and has a $21 million club option for next year, so if Chicago did acquire the right-hander, it wouldn’t necessarily have to lose him for nothing during the offseason, either.

Of course, the Marlins are sure to ask for a substantial package in return for Alcantara, and while the Cubs still do have an impressive crop of prospects in their farm system, you do have to wonder just how many more of them they would comfortably trade.

But if Chicago wants to contend for a World Series this year, it may not have a choice.
