Ravens’ New Era Has a Loaded Schedule and No Margin for Early Slip-Ups
Jesse Minter’s first season as head coach begins on the road and ramps up fast, with Lamar Jackson’s form and a revamped coaching staff both facing immediate tests.
The 2026 NFL schedule release landed like a warning shot for Baltimore. The Ravens open at Indianapolis in Week 1, head to Rio de Janeiro to face Dallas in Week 3, and then spend much of October building toward a five-game stretch against playoff teams that will either confirm this roster as a genuine contender or expose the cracks from last season. This is not a gentle introduction to the Jesse Minter era.
Minter takes over from John Harbaugh, whose 18-year run ended after Baltimore finished 8-9 and missed the postseason in 2025. Lamar Jackson battled hamstring, back, knee, ankle, and toe issues throughout the campaign, and the offence never found the consistency that made the 2024 unit historically productive. Now the Ravens are rebuilding their coaching infrastructure around a two-time MVP who turns 29 this season, and the schedule gives them very little time to settle.
A Coaching Staff Built for the Long Game
The headline appointment of the offseason was Declan Doyle as offensive coordinator. At 30, Doyle becomes the youngest play-caller in the NFL and takes on the role from Todd Monken, who departed for the Cleveland Browns head coaching job. Doyle spent 2025 as offensive coordinator at the Chicago Bears under Ben Johnson, helping Chicago reach its first Top-10 scoring offence since 2018 and claim the NFC North title. He has never called plays as a primary play-caller before.
Minter, who will call the defense himself, was clear about what he is asking of his new hire. “We want to be a physically dominant team that really plays together, plays well-connected and plays football the right way,” Minter said at the introduction of his coaching staff in February. The vision is coherent. The execution will take time, and the schedule is not offering much of it.
“The question is whether Doyle can replicate what he did in Chicago without Ben Johnson calling the plays,” one analyst tracking the AFC North said. “Jackson at full health gives him a foundation no Bears coordinator had, but this offence needs rhythm in the first four weeks, and a road opener in Indianapolis is not the place to be figuring things out.”
Anthony Weaver joins as defensive coordinator, though Minter retains play-calling duties on that side. On the offensive line, Dwayne Ledford arrives from Atlanta, where he oversaw a Top-10 rushing offense in each of the past three seasons. The Ravens also drafted Penn State guard Olaivavega Ioane with the 14th overall pick, addressing the interior line directly after Tyler Linderbaum departed in free agency.
The Draft Class Jackson Needed
Beyond Ioane, the Ravens used their 11-pick haul to build around Jackson’s supporting cast. General manager Eric DeCosta allocated seven of those picks to offensive players, taking two wide receivers and two tight ends to replenish a pass-catching group thinned by the departures of Isaiah Likely and Charlie Kolar. Fourth-round wideout Elijah Sarratt, from Indiana, drew attention for his contested-catch ability and sharp route-running at the combine. Sarratt addressed Jackson directly after the draft: “I just want to make Lamar Jackson’s job easier. That’s the whole job.”
According to analysis from Casinos.com, a widely read independent resource covering expert online casino reviews, the convergence of a new coaching staff, a reinvested offensive line, and a challenging early schedule is exactly the kind of storyline that generates sustained fan engagement throughout an NFL offseason. For Ravens supporters, the draft class and the schedule together define the stakes.
Derrick Henry remains the starting running back, and his continued effectiveness at 32 will be central to how much pressure the passing game is asked to carry. When Henry is at his best, the Ravens gain yards in chunks, Jackson operates from comfortable down-and-distance situations, and the offence becomes difficult to scheme against. When he slows, that whole dynamic shifts.
The Stretch That Will Define the Season
The most demanding portion of the schedule arrives in Weeks 8 through 12. Baltimore faces the Bills, Jaguars, Chargers, Panthers and Texans in succession, all of whom reached the postseason in 2025. Weeks 9 and 10 bring back-to-back primetime home games against Jacksonville and the Chargers, the latter a notable reunion for Minter, who spent the previous two seasons as Los Angeles’s defensive coordinator.
“If they get to the Week 13 bye at 7-4 or 8-3, this team is a serious contender,” one observer with close knowledge of the AFC North said. “If they’re 5-6, they’re chasing the season in December, and Jackson has shown he doesn’t always play at his highest level when the team is playing from behind in the standings.”
The season closes at Cincinnati on New Year’s Eve, a Thursday Night Football fixture that could decide the AFC North title. Jackson is 5-0 as a starter in Cincinnati, but Baltimore has never won a primetime game there.
Can Minter Make It Work from Week One
Every component is in place for a meaningful bounce-back season. The coaching staff is built with purpose. The draft addressed the offensive line. Free agency brought edge rusher Trey Hendrickson to bolster the pass rush. Jackson, healthy, remains one of the most disruptive quarterbacks in football.
The variables are the ones that proved costly in 2025: injury management, offensive rhythm in the early weeks, and whether a first-year head coach with a first-year play-caller can build enough cohesion before the schedule turns serious. The Ravens have the talent. September will tell us whether the structure around it is ready.
