冷笑話的「冷」這個形容詞出自於藝人吳宗憲，原義是指「冷場」。簡單的說原本一個讓人覺得無聊、不好笑的笑話，卻因笑話本身的無趣或無厘頭而引人發笑，便可稱之為冷笑話。
