Jesus Is In the Business of Setting You Free

The Greatest Story Never Told

The words of the Son of God flowed powerfully into the hearts and minds of the disciples as he came to the end of his discourse. About that time an elderly man approached in a state of frustration. Master please, please will you come? It’s my son, he is in a troubled state and I don’t know what to do.

By all means, Jesus replied; please lead the way, and he motioned to the disciples to follow.

Oh, thank you Lord, thank you so much!

An hour’s walk revealed a scene where a number of people were standing around a dusty pit. As Jesus approached, in reverence the people parted to allow Him and His disciples a chance to see what others had been staring at for days.

The bewildered old man began to tell Jesus what had happened.

“A week ago my son, began to circle a 20 foot plot of ground. He was in a fret and obviously deep in thought; he seemed to be reasoning to himself something of importance. I could tell it was personal because He kept saying that “he knew he was right, he knew he was right! As time progressed I heard him add other lines of thought, all the while continuing to chase the circle”

“What else was he saying,” Jesus asked?

“Well it appeared that his confidence was waning a bit. As he continued around this self-made furrow he was saying that he knew he was right, but then added, “I think it’s true, I think it’s true”. Obviously still not settled, but intent on not budging, he then blurted out that it couldn’t possibly be his fault. In fact as he began to pick up speed, he even had a little rhyme going.” He would say;

“I know I’m right, I think its true, but if I’m wrong it’s because of you.

I know I’m right, I think its true, but if I’m wrong it’s because of you.”

“Our neighbors, who by this time were coming in from all directions, started to line up around this dismal ditch. However many of them were being affected by my boy’s rants. With every passing they dipped their heads and shamefully lowered their eyes as if to agree with him.”

“This rhyme didn’t last long because of the sheer speed by which my son was now traveling in what was now a sizable furrow. He was going so fast and speaking so quickly that all we were getting were bit’s and pieces of his sentences. As you can hear for yourself, “di-dibit di-dabit di-dobit” doesn’t make much sense.”

“Lord, please help! If he goes on this way any longer, I’m afraid that he’ll screw himself right into the ground!”

The Lord stood close to the edge of the pit and surmised the situation. Eyeing the side of this newly formed crater and measuring the blur of the man going swiftly by, He figured this man’s son was about six feet under. Chuckling at the parity of a man trying to bury himself, the Lord breathed a sigh and then turned to find comfort in the shade of a nearby tree.

Casually He reached down to pick up a stick and began to test its strength by pressing on it with His hands and knee.

“What is He doing?” asked a disciple.

“Shhhh! I don’t know, but I think he’s about to speak.”

With all the confidence and wisdom of deity, the Lord rose to the occasion and with commanding presence warned the people to step back. The air was thick with anticipation as Jesus moved closer to the violent commotion coming from the pit. Then raising the stick above his head as if it was to be an extension of His divine will; He flung the stick into the dusty abyss!

In an instant, a squeal followed by a garbled yowl stretched across earth and sky as a tangled mass of arms and legs came shooting out of the hole. With a thud and an exhaust of air, the lad was found deposited upside down and backwards with his buttocks firmly pressed into the side of the hill.

All eyes turned to the sight of a lad who was slowly righting himself and shaking off dirt and debris. His appreciative thank-you was delivered by looks alone.

The people were gleeful and at the same time a little perplexed.

“Lord we thought that you would command a demon to “come out” or maybe call forth the angels to do your bidding.”

The Lord then spoke, “Oh I did both, I commanded that lad right out of the pit and the angels did the catching!”

If fellowship with Jesus is ever broken it is often the result of having walked away from that sweet spot with God. When we choose to give ourselves over to the ways of the world we are making choices that remain binding. This broken condition makes us subservient to any number of other masters. Such choices end up interrupting new life with Christ and we can suffer needlessly. The “STICK” Jesus threw us was the Cross! Change is available just for the asking!
