Tylicia Hooker is an Executive Coach and a Life Coach
Do You Need an Executive or Life Coach?
By JR Valrey, The People’s Minister of Information
As we march into 2025, many people are trying to align their mind sets to their new goals, as we see after every New Years. We, as people, are accustomed to reflect on what happened over the last 12 months, and set new intentions for the coming year. Discipline and not having a clear roadmap is where most people go wrong, when they fall off track from their goals in the beginning months of the new year.
Tylicia Hooker is an Executive Coach and a Life Coach, serving the people who are dead-set on accomplishing their goals in their professional as well as personal lives. The SF Bay View wants to introduce our readership to this local dynamic young professional and her business so we, as a community, can begin to be more intentional about our lives in the coming year.
JR Valrey: What is an Executive Coach? What inspired you to take this career path?
Tylicia Hooker: My own journey has inspired me. If you looked at me, just even a year ago, I was stagnant. I was experiencing challenges balancing my roles as a mother, partner, and professional while attempting to think of the future; I wasn’t even dreaming. I know what it’s like to feel pulled in a million directions and have no time for you to think, to dream, to exist in the fullness of who you could be. Coaching gave me clarity; now, I help others find that clarity for themselves. As a Certified Master Professional Coach, I work primarily as an Executive Coach, but I am also certified as a life coach. I learned from my first Executive Coach, Masharika, that it is our duty as coaches to hold up a mirror to our clients so they can truly see themselves—their strengths, their blind spots, and their potential. Coaching is a beautiful partnership, a thought-provoking and creative process that inspires clients to maximize their personal and professional potential. Through this work, I help clients unlock imagination, productivity, and leadership that often feels out of reach when life gets overwhelming.
JR Valrey: Who are your clients? And how do you assist them?
Tylicia Hooker: My clients include individuals, organizations, nonprofits, executive directors, teachers, and even therapists! I work with people and organizations navigating transitions or seeking clarity and growth. Coaching is client-led, meaning the outcomes are guided by what the client envisions as success. For example, I’ve helped clients advocate for raises, manage their time professionally and personally, set annual business goals, and figure out post-college transition plans. The possibilities are limitless because the process is tailored to each person’s unique goals and aspirations. My role is to guide and support them as they create a path forward.
JR Valrey: What kind of training is required and for how long? What kind of income does Executive Coaches make annually on average?
Tylicia Hooker: I earned my certification through ICF, the world’s largest and most recognized organization for professional coaches. ICF’s rigorous programs ensure coaches are trained to uphold high ethical and professional standards. My training focused on mastering coaching techniques, understanding human behavior, and creating transformative change for clients. The time commitment depends on the program, but mine included hundreds of hours of education, practice, and mentoring.
As for income, Executive Coaching can vary widely depending on your niche and client base. Some coaches earn $50,000 a year while building their practice; others make six or more figures once established. It’s an industry where you truly get out what you put in.
JR Valrey: What inspired you to create your own coaching business instead of working for a more established company?
Tylicia Hooker: During one of my lowest points, I worked with an incredible coach, Yusha Assad, whose guidance was truly transformative. Through our sessions, I gained self-confidence, clarity, and a deeper sense of accountability, allowing me to dream bigger while staying grounded in my boundaries. His ability to ask powerful questions and offer actionable steps helped me uncover my own potential and successfully launch a new business venture focused on creating healing spaces.
That experience inspired me to step into coaching myself. I chose this work because it doesn’t feel like work- It is a meaningful extension to who I am, and have always been. There are firms out there that allow you to work as a coach, but having my own coaching practice allows me to work for myself and gives me the freedom to build a practice that reflects my values and serves the people and communities I care about most. My coaching practice is deeply personal—it’s about healing, liberation, and helping people rewrite their stories. Working for myself allows me to tailor my approach and focus on the people and issues I care most. This independence allows me to focus on meaningful, intentional work tailored to my vision and the needs of my clients.
JR Valrey: Why is this an occupation that more Black people should look into?
Tylicia Hooker: Representation matters. Black people deserve to see themselves in the spaces where decisions are made, and transformation happens. Coaching is a powerful tool for change, and our voices and experiences are critical to creating equitable and inclusive systems. It’s also an opportunity for financial independence and leadership. Coaching allows you to turn your lived experiences and skills into something that uplifts others while building a business that’s rooted in your values.
JR Valrey: What do you enjoy about Executive Coaching?
Tylicia Hooker: I love watching people step into their power. It’s incredibly fulfilling to witness someone go from feeling stuck or unsure to making decisions with confidence and purpose. Coaching is like planting seeds—you help someone cultivate their potential and then watch them grow into something beautiful.
JR Valrey: How have your clients responded to you thus far?
Tylicia Hooker: The response has been overwhelmingly positive. Many of my clients tell me they feel seen, heard, and supported in ways they haven’t experienced before. It’s not uncommon for them to share that our work has been transformative—not just for their careers but also for their personal lives.
JR Valrey: Where do you see your Executive Coaching business in 5 years?
Tylicia Hooker: I am dreaming big! In five years, I see my business as a thriving personal and professional growth hub, particularly for Black and Brown professionals, leaders, and changemakers. I want to expand my reach through one-on-one coaching, group coaching, facilitation, and speaking engagements and turn into a 6 or 7 figure business model that can sustain itself. Ultimately, I want my work to leave a legacy—helping people live freer, fuller lives while creating systemic change in their own lives, homes, work environment communities.
JR Valrey: How can people see what you offer, as well as contact you?
Tylicia Hooker: You can find me on Instagram @tyliciahooker, LinkedIn @ Ty-Licia Hooker, or via email at mastercoachhooker@gmail.com. I’d love to connect with anyone interested and ready to start their life and professional transformation.
