The historic Ruth Williams Opera House in San Francisco is the venue for a powerful night of reggae, roots and conscious sound as ReggaeTownMusic.com brings together an extraordinary lineup of artists rooted in culture, community and creative expression. This event celebrates the global legacy of Black and Brown music while reaffirming The Ruth’s mission to create platforms where community-centered art can thrive.

The stage will feature dynamic performances by co-headliners Prezident Brown – veteran roots reggae voice with a message of uplift and empowerment – and Anthony Garvey – soulful singer and cultural storyteller.

Headliners – true Jamaican roots

Prezident Brown, born Fitz Albert Cotterell, has been called “one of the most interesting cultural dee-jays since U Roy.” Emphasizing positive messages, Prezident Brown has continued to pioneer his own direction, developing his own approach to dee-jaying that he calls “the chanting style.” Born to a Seventh Day Adventist family in Colonel Ridge, Clarendon, Prezident Brown grew up in the small town of Oracabessa in the parish of St. Mary, Jamaica.

Jamaican Roots-Rock-Reggae singer-songwriter-arranger-composer-performer Anthony Garvey has a proud lineage stretching back to his great-grandfather, the philosopher and activist Marcus Garvey. Anthony is consciously directed to fulfill the legacy with a vision of harmony among all the races permeating his music and life path.

Now based in Northern California, his experience in reggae music and Rastafari spirituality go back over 30 years to his early days in Hermitage, August Town, Jamaica. He has been creating music for decades and his lyrics and riddims lend a strong timeless Roots Rock vibe to his songs that reggae fans love.

Additional artists on the bill include the dynamic artist blending rhythms and roots energy I–Taweh; Brady Shemar, a rising voice in reggae and conscious music; Donny Rasta with his commanding presence and soulful vibes; Sir Lion and DJ Hyphee, two selectors-spinners who embed culture and community in every beat.

The historic Ruth Williams Opera House

At a time when community connection and cultural expression matter more than ever, this night marks a celebration of music that unites, heals and uplifts. The Ruth Williams Opera House has long served as a cultural anchor for Black and Brown artists and families in Bayview and across the Bay Area — providing space for artistic growth, cultural dialogue and shared experiences.

It is one of San Francisco’s oldest theaters and a designated city landmark. The building is San Francisco’s Landmark #8 and it was inducted into the National Register of Historic Buildings in 2011. The San Francisco Arts Commission had purchased and renovated the facility in the 1970s for use as a community cultural center. For decades, it has served as a central site for cultural development, artistic expression, and community organizing in Bayview Hunters Point, a neighborhood with a long history of both cultural richness and systemic disinvestment. Since receiving its 501(c)(3) status in 1992, The Ruth has functioned not only as a performance venue, but as a community anchor that nurtures Black arts, supports youth development, and preserves cultural continuity amid ongoing displacement and gentrification.

In terms of reggae and world music, The Ruth has an established track record of presenting both local and internationally recognized artists whose work aligns with our mission of cultural exchange and healing through music. Most recently, internationally acclaimed Chilean reggae artist Quique Neira as part of his Spanglish Reggae Tour was hosted there. The venue has also presented multiple iterations of their Afro Latinx Festival, which has featured artists such as La Dame Blanche, Chuchito Valdés, and other Caribbean, Afro-diasporic and Latin artists from the Bay Area and beyond.

The venue director states, “These programs reflect our broader commitment to uplifting global Black and Brown musical traditions while providing a platform where artists can connect meaningfully with community audiences. Through music, education and cultural programming, The Ruth continues to operate as both a historic institution and a living, evolving space for artistic and social impact.”
