Vaccinating Your Pets – What You Should Know Part 2 (Videos)

In the previous article, the threat of rabies was discussed as it relates to human exposure from domestic dog bites and other sources. This article will cover in-depth information regarding the rabies vaccine. The core vaccines and non-core vaccines for dogs (DHLPP) will be covered in a future article.

Much of what is known regarding animal immunization and vaccination (there is a difference) comes from Dr. Ronald Schultz. Dr. Schultz, (1944 – 2024), is recognized as the foremost authority on animal vaccination and immunization, spanning from the 1960s until his death. He dedicated his career to immunological research in animals. The following is a brief summary of his career.

The meeting was dedicated to Ronald Schultz, PhD, professor emeritus at the University of Wisconsin-Madison School of Veterinary Medicine, for his work in veterinary virology and immunology. In 1982, Dr. Schultz became the founding chair of the Department of Pathobiological Sciences at Wisconsin’s veterinary school, a position he held until his retirement in 2016.

Dr. Schultz spent his career emphasizing the translational aspects of immunological research, especially the development and assessment of immunodiagnostics and vaccines in domestic animal species.

A founder of the American Association of Veterinary Immunologists, Dr. Schultz served as the organization’s first president in 1979. Years later, in 1994, he was president of CRWAD. Dr. Schultz is the first recipient of the AAVI Distinguished Veterinary Immunologist Award and is an honorary diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Microbiologists.

There has not been one reference used on vaccines for dogs in this series that did not cite work from Dr. Schultz or provide information taught by Dr. Schultz.

Many pet owners are aware, some may not be, that there are rabies vaccines with two different labels – one for one year and another for three years. What is the difference? None, it is the same vaccine with different labels. But, the label indicates how long the vaccine lasts, right? It does not. The one-year label rabies vaccine means the manufacturer only followed the trial participants for one year whereas the three-year label rabies vaccine means the manufacturer followed participants for three years. It has nothing to do with how long the vaccine is effective.

Just as in vaccines for humans, vaccines for animals lack long-term studies. Moreover, no, and that means NO, vaccine has ever been proven safe – there is an associated risk with vaccination.

The annual revaccination recommendation on the vaccine label is just that: a recommendation without the backing of long term duration of immunity studies, and, surprisingly, it is not a legal requirement. Rabies vaccine is the only commonly used vaccine that requires that duration of immunity studies be carried out before licensing in the United States. Even with rabies vaccines, the label may be misleading in that a three year duration of immunity product may also be labeled and sold as a one year duration of immunity product.

According to Dr. Schultz, “There is no benefit from annual rabies vaccination and most one-year rabies products are similar or identical to the 3-year products with regard to duration of immunity and effectiveness. However, if they are 1-year rabies vaccines, they must be legally given annually! Rabies vaccine is the only canine vaccine requiring a minimum duration of immunity study. However, revaccination annually does not necessarily improve immunity. However, annual vaccination does significantly increase the risk for an adverse reaction in the dog.”

I tell practitioners that vaccines are drugs, albeit biological drugs. I remind them that they would not consider it good medicine to give an unnecessary pharmaceutical drug on a recurring basis. I think it is even worse to give a vaccine, or biological drug, that isn’t necessary. The possible adverse consequences of a vaccine generally far outweigh the adverse consequences of a pharmaceutical drug. A pharmaceutical drug is usually much more restricted in its action. However, each time we stimulate an immune response, we have to look at the effect on all body systems—not only on antibody responses or cell-mediated immunity, but also on interactions with the endocrine system and the nervous system.”

Even with labeling, a 3-year rabies vaccine can be labeled and sold as a 1-year rabies vaccine, meaning there is mislabeling of these vaccines occurring which has little to do with duration of immunity.

According to Dr. Schultz, a properly vaccinated animal done to produce immunization, with a rabies vaccine, can protect the dog for a minimum of seven years and probably for the life of your pet. Therefore, based on what is known about the production of vaccines for humans, we can safely assume it is no better for our animals, meaning our animals are exposed to the same dangers as we are when receiving a vaccination. The studies conducted by Dr. Schultz indicate our furry family members are being over-vaccinated.

Despite the efforts of Dr. Schultz to educate veterinarians on the principles of vaccinal immunity, which most vets do not understand per Dr. Schultz, veterinarians are allowed to administer rabies and core vaccines annually to pets. You can read many of the myths imparted by vets in the cited article.

Before highlighting some adverse reactions and health conditions that can be caused by animal vaccines, we have to understand that the same problems with human vaccines are the same with animal vaccines. Vaccine “safety” studies in animals are always conducted only on healthy animals. The vaccine labels even state that only healthy animals are to be vaccinated. Yet, vaccines are given to all animals regardless of their health condition, history, or genetics. These safety studies are conducted for only days to monitor for side effects/adverse reactions – just as some vaccines are for children. Vaccine reactions (adverse events) can take months, sometimes years, to occur. Vaccine safety trials in animals do not use a placebo, an inert substance, for the control group; another vaccine is used, which skews the results. What about vaccine reaction reporting for animals?

Don’t expect vaccine reactions to be caught in the real world either.

Most people don’t know that less than 1% of human vaccine adverse reactions get reported to the FDA.

Less than 1%.

I’d wager that it’s even lower for veterinary vaccines.

The CVB (the Center for Veterinary Biologics), a division of the USDA (United States Department of Agriculture) is responsible for tracking adverse events in animal vaccines … but the information is considered “proprietary” and property of the vaccine manufacturers.

What?

We aren’t allowed to see the reports of adverse events?

No wonder people think vaccine reactions are rare.

Unlike pet foods and drugs, there’s no place where vets, or even you and I, can find reports on the safety of our dogs’ vaccines.

And here’s the weird part …  90% of adverse reactions don’t get reported to the CVB. They go directly to the vaccine manufacturers. The only time the CVB receives adverse reports from the vaccine manufacturers is if they request them.

And that’s a rare occurrence.

Let’s recap …

Only 1% of adverse reactions to vaccines are likely to be reported

Of those, 90% are reported to the vaccine manufacturer directly, but not the CVB

When the vaccine manufacturers receive those reports, they are not obligated to send them to the CVB and the CVB doesn’t routinely request them.

The minuscule number of reports that do reach the CVB aren’t accessible to vets or the general public. So there’s no way for vets and pet owners to find out just how many adverse reactions are caused by vaccines.

It appears the entire vaccine program, animals and humans, have serious issues to say the least.

What can be some adverse events experienced by animals because of the use of these vaccines. Dr. Ronald Schultz identified many adverse events of a serious nature, which include:

  • Vaccine injection site cancers
  • Anaphylaxis (life-threatening shock)
  • Arthritis, polyarthritis, HOD (Hypertrophy Osteodystrophy)
  • Autoimmune hemolytic anemia
  • Immune Mediated thrombocytopenia (IMTP)
  • Hemolytic Disease of the newborn (Neonatal Isoerythrolysis)
  • Thyroiditis
  • Glomerulonephritis
  • Disease or enhanced disease the vaccine was designed to prevent
  • Myocarditis (inflammation of the heart muscle caused by infections, viruses, or immune diseases)
  • Post vaccinal encephalitis or polyneuritis
  • Seizures
  • Abortion, congenital anomalies, embryonic/fetal death, failure to conceive

Unfortunately, no agency is taking seriously the harm vaccines can cause our furry family members.

Dr. Patricia Jordan, DVM, identified 65 ways a rabies vaccination can harm your dog. Read this source very carefully. It is too long to include here.

Some of these injuries are caused by the “mystery ingredients” contained in animal vaccines. Even veterinarians do not know the ingredients in animal vaccines as manufacturers hide behind “proprietary” information and “trade secret” monikers. What ingredients do we know that are in animal vaccines?

Although we don’t know all the ingredients of every individual vaccine … we do know the sorts of ingredients common in most vaccines:

  • Adjuvants: aluminum salts, oil-based squalene, bacteria-based lipopolysaccharides, sugars.
  • Preservatives: mercury (thimerosal), antibiotics (gentamicin, amphotericin B, neomycin, polymyxin-B), phenoxyethanol.
  • Attenuating agents: formaldehyde.
  • Growth medium: foreign animal tissues:
    • Chick embryo
    • Bovine serum
    • Human fetal lung tissue
    • Monkey kidney tissue
    • Porcine tissue
    • Eggs
    • Insect proteins
  • Fungicides and antimicrobials: phenol, formaldehyde.
  • Buffering agents: glycerol, sorbitol, sucrose, salts, borax.
  • Stabilizers: formaldehyde.
  • Surfactant, Permeability Enhancer: polysorbate 80 (Tween® 80).
  • Virus particles: individual vaccines (modified live or killed), contamination viruses (Rotavirus) from the animal tissues used to grow vaccines.
  • Contaminates: glyphosate from GMO-fed animals … used for vaccine growth medium (eggs, bovine and porcine tissue), insect viruses (Army worm), Rotavirus.

The article contains a breakdown of each of the types of ingredients in great detail and is well worth the time to understand it. The takeaway is none of these ingredients in vaccines are healthy for your dog and likely to produce harm. With the Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) protection for “formulas”, good luck with trying to find out more. In other words, buyer beware.

Julia Henriques covers some of the toxic ingredients known to be present in animal vaccines.

Early vaccines contained infectious material – meaning pus!

They were preserved in bird feathers for about three months. Starting in 1850, the manufacturers started using glycerol (glycerine) to try to preserve the vaccine and prevent decomposition. They’re still using it now.

But vaccine ingredients today are much more inflammatory and worrisome.

Nowadays vaccines include dangerous metals like mercury (thimerosal or ethylmercury) and aluminum. They also contain toxic ingredients like formaldehyde (a known carcinogen), and cytotoxic ingredients like phenol red.

  • Thimerosal: vaccines still contain this ingredient despite the extreme neurotoxicity of mercury proven repeatedly in studies for decades. Some vaccines claim to be thimerosal free, but they may not be. Read more about this deceptive practice.
  • Aluminum is a grade 3 (out of 4) carcinogen. It opens up the blood-brain barrier, allowing neurotoxins into the brain. It also up-regulates IgE, the allergy immunoglobulin, which makes your dog more susceptible to all kinds of allergies – skin issues, inhalant allergies, anaphylaxis and even death.
  • And when vaccines contain both aluminum and mercury, the risks increase. Aluminum reduces the body’s ability to eliminate mercury, making the mercury even more toxic.

Vaccines also contain viruses and proteinaceous material that leads to autoimmune disease. An example of this is SV40, the monkey virus in polio vaccines that causes cancer.

In bacterial vaccines, the antigen causes the same immunopathology as the disease itself. This is especially true in Lyme and leptospirosis vaccines, which can cause conditions like renal failure and lead to death. It’s hard to swallow these effects when the diseases themselves aren’t lethal!

And there’s no independent research into the long-term or genetic effects of these ingredients.

Inevitably, more vaccines mean more risks. Dr. Ronald Schultz acknowledges that vaccines against lethal viruses may be beneficial, but repeating those vaccines yearly or even every three years is completely unnecessary and over-vaccination is definitely harmful. “Dr Schultz also advises against using any bacterial vaccines (like leptospirosis, bordetella and Lyme). His research shows them to be ineffective.”

Dr. Karen Becker conducted several interviews with Dr. Schultz 10 to 13 years ago. You can find the videos on her YouTube channel Dr. Karen Becker. The links to the videos used for this series are below.

Before anyone gets their nose out of joint, no one is suggesting that you do not vaccinate your animals. With any medical treatment, there is a risk involved – vaccinations, being a medical treatment, carry a risk. Pet parents should know the benefits and risks associated with animal vaccines, which many may not be getting. Moreover, Dr. Schultz’s research has indicated that our four-legged family members are being over-vaccinating, causing health problems in dogs. Yet, veterinarians, animal hospital associations, veterinary medicine associations, and local and State entities have been reluctant to change recommendations and legislation. It is up to pet parents to educate themselves for the health of their furry family members.

In the next part of the series, the core and non-core vaccines will be covered along with immunity.
