Microsoft has decided to stop using China-based engineers for technical support related to U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) work following a ProPublica investigation that highlighted potential national security risks. This decision was made after concerns were raised about the involvement of foreign engineers in maintaining sensitive Pentagon cloud systems, which could expose critical data to cyber threats.
The investigation revealed that Microsoft had been employing Chinese engineers under the supervision of U.S. “digital escorts” who had security clearances but often lacked the technical expertise to adequately monitor the work of their Chinese counterparts. This setup raised alarms regarding the potential for espionage or sabotage, especially given the sensitive nature of the data involved, which includes materials directly supporting military operations.
In response to these concerns, Microsoft’s Chief Communications Officer, Frank Shaw, announced on social media platform X that the company had made changes to its support practices for U.S. government customers to ensure that no China-based engineering teams are providing technical assistance for DoD government cloud and related services.
This decision aligns with the stance taken by Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, who emphasized that foreign engineers from any country, including China, should never be allowed to maintain or access DoD systems. Hegseth ordered a two-week review of Pentagon cloud deals in light of the revelations.
Microsoft’s move to halt the use of Chinese tech support for DoD work is aimed at mitigating the risk to national security and addressing the bipartisan political pressure to secure sensitive military systems.
