George Orwell’s novel Nineteen Eighty-Four is a dystopian movie directed by Michael Radford, released in the United Kingdom on October 10, 1984. It stars John Hurt as Winston Smith, a low-ranking civil servant in the totalitarian superstate of Oceania, where the government, led by the omnipresent Big Brother, exercises total control through constant surveillance, propaganda, and the manipulation of history.
The film follows Smith as he begins a secret affair with Julia, a fellow Party member, which leads to their arrest by the Thought Police and subsequent torture and “rehabilitation” at the Ministry of Love. Richard Burton, who played O’Brien, delivered his final screen performance in this film, which was released two months after his death and is dedicated to him. The movie received positive critical reviews, was nominated for a BAFTA Award for Best Art Direction, and won two Evening Standard British Film Awards. It was filmed primarily in and around London, with locations including Battersea Power Station, the Beckton Gas Works, and Senate House
