A newly published peer-reviewed study by Children’s Health Defense researchers Karl Jablonowski, Ph.D., and Brian S. Hooker, Ph.D., documents consistently elevated rates of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) among children of U.S. military personnel compared to children in civilian families.
The analysis, released on November 20, 2025, draws on eight consecutive years (2016–2023) of data from the U.S. Census Bureau’s National Survey of Children’s Health, comprising more than 330,000 child records.
After adjusting for age, sex, race/ethnicity, and household income, the findings are striking and consistent:
• Children insured through military health plans (primarily TRICARE) showed a 30.7% higher ASD prevalence (4.12%) than those with private or public civilian insurance (3.19%).
• Children of mothers with any military service history had a 46.2% increased likelihood of an ASD diagnosis.
• Children of fathers with military service history had a 42.7% increased likelihood.
• A pronounced severity gradient was observed among children of military fathers: 37% higher odds for mild ASD, 46% for moderate ASD, and 83% for severe ASD.
• Prevalence followed a dose-response pattern, rising with the intensity of parental service, from lowest among children of non-military parents to highest among children of active-duty personnel.
These elevated rates appeared in every year of the study period, indicating a stable and ongoing disparity.
The authors suggest that distinctive environmental exposures associated with military service, such as PFAS chemicals, burn-pit emissions, industrial solvents, contaminated drinking water on bases, and potentially more rigorous early-childhood vaccination schedules, may contribute to the increased risk.
While the study cannot establish causation and notes limitations inherent in survey-based data (including possible differences in diagnostic practices), the strength, consistency, and dose-response relationship of the findings warrant further targeted investigation.
As Dr. Jablonowski stated, “The men and women who serve in our military deserve better… These findings show there is also a previously unknown risk to the neurological health of their children.”
