Within the last couple of years, the idea of crowdfunding has really peaked my interest. For those that may not fully understand what it means, it’s basically the practice of funding a project or venture by raising money from large pools of people. This process is usually executed via the Internet. Most people I talk to fall on one side of the fence or the other. Some believe that it’s tacky to ask people to fund your product/project, while others think it’s a viable solution to solidify their dreams. After personally backing extremely successful crowdfunding campaigns for TLC, De La Soul, and Imbue (The Magnetic Tea Infusing Vessel), I became even more of a believer of the latter.
I started my own publishing company in 2013, called 7th Sign Publishing and have released three poetry books of my own as well as three other books from two authors. I consider myself to be an independent author and there isn’t necessarily much love for authors as far as crowd funding goes. Sure, there are some unbelievable success stories out there, but still not enough to capture mainstream attention. Yesterday, I launched my own Kickstarter campaign for my upcoming novel, Fortune Cookie. Fortune Cookie as about a woman who moves to a new city to flee a dark past and some ugly secrets. She goes on about her life, until her secrets begin to surface against her own will years later. This time, she may not be able to get away alive.
