NASA to Accelerate Nuclear Reactor Deployment on Moon Amid Space Race Concerns
Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy, currently serving as interim NASA administrator, is expected to announce fast-tracked plans to deploy a nuclear reactor on the Moon by 2030, according to a POLITICO report citing internal documents.
While NASA has previously explored lunar nuclear power systems, the new directive sets a definitive timeline and raises the project’s strategic importance. The agency will solicit proposals for a 100-kilowatt reactor, significantly larger than the earlier 40-kilowatt concept, with a deadline to identify private industry partners within 60 days.
“It is about winning the second space race,” a senior NASA official told POLITICO, referencing growing concerns over a China–Russia lunar alliance potentially establishing exclusive zones on the Moon.
The directive suggests that the first country to deploy such a reactor could declare a “keep-out zone”, a move that could limit U.S. access to parts of the lunar surface.
In parallel, Duffy is pushing another directive to replace the aging International Space Station (ISS) with commercially operated stations by 2030. NASA plans to award contracts to at least two private companies within six months, aiming to prevent China’s Tiangong station from becoming the world’s only continuously crewed outpost in orbit.
Together, these initiatives mark a major acceleration in U.S. efforts to reclaim leadership in space exploration as competition intensifies with China and Russia.
