When Darkness Speaks: Understanding God’s Purpose Amid Evil
Theology and Politics from a Conservative, Biblical Perspective
I asked my wife if she ever felt as though she was kind of hovering between earth and heaven; not fully here in this life, but not yet in heaven? The reason I asked was because that’s the way I’ve felt and I thought that was a bit strange. Her answer surprised me. She stated without hesitation that she certainly did feel as though she wasn’t fully grounded in this life anymore because of the fact that she looked forward to being with our Lord in heaven. This does not mean (for me or her), that we do not like this life. It simply means that we both understand there is a higher calling on our lives and it will only find its full meaning when this life ends and we are both safely and permanently with our Lord. While we see tremendous evil occurring throughout society, we also know it has not reached its zenith yet, but will one day. This is certainly part of the reason that we both feel somewhat of a disassociation between life here on earth and what it so to come in eternity.
I think the fact that my wife’s mother has passed on tends to emphasize such an awareness. Both of her parents are now deceased. While she has her two brothers and sister, as well as some surviving cousins and at least one uncle remaining alive, that give her some sense of family. In my case, both of my parents are gone as well as my only sister. While I still have cousins that I grew up around, as nice as they are, we have very little in common these days. In one case, I have a cousin who is deeply ensconced within the Jehovah’s Witness cult. With other cousins, though they state they are Christians (and certainly could be), their theology is so far removed from mine that it means we can discuss few things.
The reason this all came to a head for me is due to the fact that I’ve been studying or at least reading through some of the Epstein files released by the DOJ. In the latest trove, from something called Dataset 12, in which a teenage girl tells the heart-wrenching story of her many pregnancies while under Epstein’s “care.”[1] It’s pretty horrific. I’ve linked it below for anyone who is interested but be warned that it’s pretty graphic. If it does not melt your heart and even fill you with a sense of deep anger at Epstein and the other alleged pedophiles who came and went from his island, there’s something wrong with you.
The article was posted by Vigilant Citizen and he tells us that the young girl wrote in code. Instead of writing across the page horizontally, she wrote vertically, two columns at a time. The tragedy here is that she was essentially used as an incubator for one child after another. She gave birth and each time, the baby was immediately removed from her, never to be seen again. In one instance, because she was not allowed enough time to heal from giving birth and was impregnated again, she ended up having a miscarriage, which she flushed down the toilet.
In another case, she was actually allowed to hold her newborn for just a few minutes before the newborn was abruptly removed from her. None of her children were allowed to breastfeed. She vividly remembers the whimpers or cries of each new baby that survived before that baby was permanently removed from her sight. The agony with which she expresses herself is raw and unfiltered.
I began to wonder why God allows this type of evil to exist. Yes, I understand completely that we – human beings – invited evil into this world through our first parents, Adam and Eve. We as a people are fully culpable in that as Paul explains very clearly throughout the book of Romans.
But I began to consider Noah’s flood and then the situation with Lot. I have absolutely no idea how bad people were leading up to the global flood of Noah’s day. I have a sneaking suspicion that it was so bad, so violent, so evil that the only recourse God had was to destroy every living person except Noah and his immediate family. The Bible states as much starting in Genesis 6. It is hard for me to imagine that people were so overtaken and consumed by evil that they had sunk to a level necessitating God’s divine judgment.
At the same time, I believe the world is once again moving toward that very same thing, which will eventually usher in God’s divine wrath to be poured out onto the entirety of this world.
But then we have Lot and his situation at Sodom/Gomorrah, starting in Genesis 19 (though introduced back in Genesis 13). Here we see a situation where the people of Lot’s day were so evil, so vile that it permeated them and their society. It wasn’t that they were practicing homosexuals as evidenced by the fact that when the two angelic messengers showed up in the city, Lot begged them to stay with him inside instead of staying out in the city square because Lot was afraid of what would happen to them. Sure enough, the men and boys of the entire city came to Lot’s home and demanded that Lot send the two men out so that they might know (rape) them. Lot, offered his two virgin daughters, but the men/boys would have none of that so entrenched in their homosexuality were they that they only wanted to “know” the two strangers sexually.
We know the rest of the story. The angels used their power to blind the men/boys so that they could not even find the door and wearied themselves out by trying. Eventually, as the Bible informs us, Sodom, Gomorrah and the other cities of the plain (except Zoar), were destroyed completely by the angels after they got Lot and his immediate family out of their to safety. By the way, I know that some folks don’t like hearing this, but this event where Lot and his family were safely removed from the city prior to God’s wrath pouring out is an example of “rapture.” I believe prior to God pouring out His wrath on this earth in judgment against evil that persists here, He will remove His Bride first. But to each their own.
At any rate, I could not help but wonder why God chose to step in where Lot was concerned to destroy the evil that existed in the cities of the plain where Lot lived? Why does God at times take huge measures to right wrongs, while at other times, He seems to allow all forms of evil exist without letup as we are seeing today with the information that has come out regarding Epstein Island, voter fraud and the unbelievable amount of corruption that seems to exist in our governments (fed, state and local), today? It boggles the mind.
So I began praying about it and wondered. Was God planning on doing anything about those elite pedophilias who tortured, raped, impregnated and then sacrificed those precious newborns to Moloch, Baal or some other pagan deity? Why does God continue to allow this seemingly without respite?
I knew I needed to be careful because in one sense, I have no right to ask God why He does what He does. In fact, I’m quite certain, like Job, I’m not capable of understanding why God does many of the things He does. If I’m not careful, I would soon be putting myself in God’s place, telling Him what He needs to do. May the Lord forgive my preposterous audacity in thinking I know better than He does.
But it did force me to look once again at the old “Why does God allow evil to exist?” question that is something that all Christians should come to understand, to a degree of course.
So I went on the Internet in the hopes of finding other Christians who ask the same question and truly want to understand things from God’s perspective, or at least, do the best they can in understanding it.
One of the very first things that popped up was a sermon by Dr. John MacArthur on the subject. The title of his sermon is Why Does God Allow So Much Suffering and Evil?[2] The sermon is from 10 years ago and I cannot recommend it enough. My wife and I watched it last night and plan on watching it again soon. It is extremely nuanced as MacArthur weaves a biblical tapestry through the problem of evil, why it exists, God’s sovereignty over all things, and His purposes from evil.
My recommendation is that everyone watch this video and then watch it again. Take notes. MacArthur’s impressive exposition of specific Scriptures combine to provide a healthy understanding of God’s use of evil and what it ultimately accomplishes.
One of the things that MacArthur briefly discusses is when Jesus was hanging on the cross. During the three hour period of darkness, Jesus said nothing. He was simply there experiencing what He experienced, again for three solid hours.
MacArthur then notes it is after these three hours that Jesus then asks the question, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” While MacArthur was not dogmatic about this, he went onto say that it is possible that during those three hours, Jesus – infinitely God while also being human – experienced the infinite wrath of God the Father. In other words, Jesus experienced the full wrath of His Father for every sin that has ever been committed by anyone…ever. So what does that mean? It means that His sacrificial death was absolutely enough to pay for every sin committed by every sinner throughout all time. Of course, only those who exercise faith in Jesus’ finished work are given salvation. The others? Hell awaits unfortunately. I’d never heard it explained like this before.
So, after God the Father had poured out the full cup of His wrath on His Son, the one who died in OUR place, it ended. It was at this point that Jesus asked why His Father/God had forsaken Him. Is there a sense then that while Jesus was experiencing the full wrath of His Father, there was also this deep understanding of the Father’s righteousness as Paul notes in Romans 3:21-26.
21 But now the righteousness of God has been manifested apart from the law, although the Law and the Prophets bear witness to it— 22 the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ for all who believe. For there is no distinction: 23 for fall have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, 24 and are justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus, 25 whom God put forward as a propitiation by his blood, to be received by faith. This was to show God’s righteousness, because in his divine forbearance he had passed over former sins. 26 It was to show his righteousness at the present time, so that he might be just and the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus. (ESV, emphasis added)
Look how many times Paul refers to God’s righteousness. The entire history of humanity’s failure, culminating in the unbelievable substitutionary death of the Perfect One was all to manifest God’s righteousness! Notice also that God had previously taken a position of forbearance with respect to former sins (v25) so that He could ultimately showcase His perfect righteous character in which all who came to Him in faith would receive salvation!
The darker evil becomes, the more glorious God appears because of the distance between the two things. In Him is no darkness at all (1 John 1:5), so it stands to reason that the more evil and corrupt spiritual beings and people are, the greater God’s glory is seen for what it is because of the tremendous gap between the two.
MacArthur goes into much more detail here, touching on numerous subjects that connect with the problem of evil. Again, the way he moves through these topics in support of the unfolding of evil throughout society is done by connecting the dots from Scripture. Whether or not God ultimately opts to deal with evil now (which is what we want), or wait until His timing comes into play for His purposes to unfold, we can know and rest in the fact that He will deal with it in His way and in His time. Until then we are to trust in His divine council and wisdom and not attempt to play God by thinking we know better than He does.

I stopped at “God did not create evil”. There is a verse in the Bible that says “I created evil”. What the preache said was very stewpid because he knows God created EVERYTHING.
Second, he seem to imply we go to heaven. THERE is NO verse in the Bible that says that. I suppose and am quite sure this guy celebrates Christmass and Ishtar too.
