Faceless Killers by Henning Mankell
Although a brutal murder mystery, this was a welcome transition from my last two reads that teemed with extreme brutality and inhumanity.
Mankell was able to take the reader through an extensive murder investigation, revealing all its flaws and biases in an extremely coherent way.
Detective Wallender leads the investigation into the murder of an elderly couple in their isolated farm home in Sweden. His personal issues and demons sometimes spill over into his professional life yet he manages to keep the divergent pieces moving together to ultimately solve the puzzle.
Kurt Wallendar is best described as a hard boiled detective. Divorced and bitter, he drinks to excess and doesn’t keep promises, even those he makes to himself.
Britta-Lena Boden, a young bank clerk is an amazing young woman with an envious memory for details that help Kurt solve his case.
Anette Brolin, another strong female attracts Wallendar’s eye. She is his polar opposite; married, dedicated to work, yet able to distance herself from it at times. She recognizes Wallendar’s skills and turns the other cheek when he slips up.
