Such a horrific book, and not for it’s content, but for its content…
What will a human do when his humanity is stripped away and survival is the only game in town? Sadly, he will do just about anything and does so with little thought of anyone but himself.
Tadek, the book’s narrator is obviously the author Tadeusz Borowski, himself a concentration camp prisoner from Poland. The never-ending onslaught of horrors he encounters eventually desensitizes him and he becomes less and less human.
Staszek is well connected at the camp and is able to get food and supplies and uses his connections to elevate his status among his fellow prisoners.
