Comments: Jim’s introduction is an eye-catcher. It appears that Jim Willis became fascinated with treasure hunting when a book fell in his lap called Treasure Island by Robert Louis Stevenson. Jim Willis’ 10-year-old imagination went into overdrive. This eventually lead Jim to explore Superstition Mountains. Around every corner of his exploring, he would imagine finding the Lost Dutchman Mine. This passage is amazing, because I can relate to what Jim is saying. At a young age I went to Superstition Mountains with my dad and my imagination was running wild, because I thought I would find some of the hidden treasure. In this book, you will find information on “The Curses of Charles Island”. This island is off the coast of Milford, Connecticut. The island is known as Thrice Cursed Island. The island is cursed by an Indian Chief, Captain Kidd the Pirate and some sailors that hid some treasure in 1721 after stealing it from a Mexican ruler. When Captain Kidd was captured and executed by hanging, his last words were: “I have nothing to say except that I have been sworn against by perjured and wicked people.” This is when people believe that the curse actually began, after the execution of Captain Kidd. As you move along with this book, you will find information about the notorious pirate Edward Teach, you might know him as “Blackbeard”. The murder of Blackbeard was horrendous. The battle between Lt. Robert Maynard and Blackbeard was shocking for everyone that witnessed or participated in the battle. When Blackbeard was defeated, his severed head was placed on Maynard’s bowsprit as grisly proof of his death. Blackbeard’s head became a trophy for many years. As for Blackbeard’s treasure? Blackbeard claims he buried treasure in many diverse places. Had any of that treasure been found? No, but people all over the world still search for Blackbeard’s buried treasure. I find stories about pirates captivating because on my mother’s side, I am related to Jean Lafitte the pirate and I do have some Lafitte(s) in my family. Then on my father’s side, I am related to Bartholomew “Black Bart” Roberts. My dad does have Welsh blood and when I went to Wales, I met some Roberts that also claim they are related to Bartholomew. So, who knows. Jim Willis dazzles us with stories about Jean Lafitte. You will learn that Jean was another pirate that was rumored to have a lot of wealth buried here and there. But where? No one has ever found any of Lafitte’s treasures. Another mystery is that Jean Lafitte disappeared off the face of the Earth. Lafitte for a short time was lauded as a hero, in regard to his service during the war. President James Madison pardoned the crimes of Lafitte, only for Lafitte to vanished. Some historians believe he returned to piracy and that his treasure sunk with one of his ships. Another tantalizing mystery that hopefully will be solved one day.
