Never Flinch by Stephen King (Audiobook)
I think by now anyone who knows me knows what a huge Stephen King fan I am. If you tell me Holly Gibney has returned I’m on it in a heartbeat. She is one of my favourite book characters and I love delving into whatever trouble she’ll get herself in while investigating a new case. This time she takes on being a bodyguard and that was an interesting endeavour.
This novel has two essentially separate but intertwining storylines and I’m still amazed at how it all came together in the end. One is a killer out for revenge and the other a lunatic out to get a very popular feminist. In the middle of it all is Holly. She is a bodyguard for the feminist and an investigator trying to help her friend Detective Izzy Jaynes. As the story unfolds we are treated to Stephen King at his best as the plot twists and turns keep on coming.
I loved all the old characters like Barbara and Jerome that were back along with some new ones. This novel can stand on its own but you are definitely missing out on the familiarity of characters you grow to know and love from the past books. I’ve always loved King’s horror novels. I’ve been reading those for – gasp! – over forty years but he is also immensely talented at weaving an amazing mystery/thriller as he does in the Holly Gibney series or the Mr. Mercedes series. These books are among my favourites.
The audiobook is read by Jessie Mueller who is an actress, singer, and one terrific narrator! She was such a pleasure to listen to. She brought all the characters to life with very distinctive voices and her portrayal of Holly was spot on. She made an amazing novel even better by bringing all the craziness alive in my mind. There is also an afterword from Stephen King and it’s always a pleasure to hear his final thoughts on his work.
This novel isn’t just for Stephen King fans. If you like mysteries and thrillers you’re going to love it. Never Flinch just released so grab a copy and settle in for the ride. Highly recommended!
