It Is Raining Container Boxes into the Port of Long Beach (Video)
In this 10 September 2025 video, host Sal Mercogliano — a maritime historian at Campbell University and former merchant mariner — discusses the container collapse that took place on board MV Mississippi in the Port of Long Beach on 9 September 2025. In-Port collapses are typically caused by human error or balancing issues with a vessel rather than severe weather encounters when out at sea. According to a World Shipping Council (WSC) report, up to 1,382 shipping containers are lost at sea each year.
The Port of Long Beach, administered as the Harbor Department of the City of Long Beach, is a container port in the United States, which adjoins Port of Los Angeles. Acting as a major gateway for US–Asian trade, the port occupies 3,200 acres of land with 25 miles of waterfront in the city of Long Beach, California. The seaport generates approximately US$100 billion per year in trade and employs more than 316,000 people in Southern California.
The Port of Long Beach’s main channels are 76 feet deep, with plans to deepen some areas to 80 feet, and specific berths and basins can be as deep as 55 feet, while terminal depths vary but are over 50 feet. The harbor is continuously being modified to accommodate larger vessels, with projects to deepen and widen various waterways and approaches.
