In state court systems, sentencing procedures vary considerably from one jurisdiction to another. Federal sentencing tends to involve a more uniform nationwide structure, though significant litigation may occur regarding how guideline calculations should be applied. For defendants, understanding potential sentencing exposure is often a critical component of federal defense strategy.
