The trade dispute extends far beyond the grocery aisle, heavily impacting manufacturing and employment. The conflict has battered heavy industry. Canada’s steel exports to the U.S. plummeted from an annualized $8.5 billion down to $3.5 billion. This broader downturn contributed to over 110,000 Canadian job losses across August and September alone. The escalation began after trade talks collapsed between the Trump administration and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney. Trump utilized Section 338 of the Tariff Act of 1930 to levy 50% tariffs on a massive sweep of Canadian goods, citing grievances over Canadian dairy protections and border enforcement. To mitigate costs and bypass tariffed U.S. imports, Canadian consumers are actively pivoting toward a “Buy Canadian” strategy, intentionally sourcing locally produced food, clothing, and household brands
