Prince: No Artificial Fillers
With nearly 50 studio albums to his credit, Prince makes it hard for fans to keep up with his music. True to form, he simultaneously released 2 albums on September 30. Prince’sArt Official Age debuted at No.1 on Billboard’s Top R & B Album’s Chart and No. 5 on the Top 200 Albums Chart, with 51,000 copies sold. His rock inspired album,Plectrumelectrum, featuring his all-girl group, 3rdEyeGirl (check out my review of that album here - 3rdEyeGirl: PlectrumElectrum) shot straight to the top of the Top Rock Albums Chart, with 23,000 copies sold. But for the sake of this review, I’ll stick to talking about the purple one’s own album, Art Official Age. I was pleasantly surprised by this album, as it’s the most focused, funky and entertaining Prince has sounded in years.
Art Official Age kicks off with the upbeat techno boogie “Art Official Cage”. This song takes what could have been crashing elements of pop, house and R & B and fluidly blends them together here. He uses a bit of auto tune here too, which somehow sounds fresh and new – not overused and stale like it actually is. It’s a great kick off for the album and I love the break downs here that pull at your imagination with the guitar solos and weird ad libs. “Clouds”, the album’s first single is a bit more toned down, but no less original. This song has a feel good, vintage R & B love song feel with the best line of the song saying, “Never underestimate the power of a kiss on the neck”. This song is closer to the Prince we knew in his heyday. He even does a little sing rapping here.
