Ludacris's Burning Bridges
Since Ludacris’s first major label studio album, Back For The First Time, there have been a slew of new rappers emerging who are hungry to take rap’s top spot. Take J. Cole for instance, whose latest album sold 350,000 copies in its first week. Hardly anyone period (not even counting Hip Hop music) is doing that these days. So it goes without saying that the pressure could easily be there for Ludacris to prove he’s still got it. His long awaited Ludaversal album has been pushed back several times, although fans will hopefully get it next year. In the meantime, he has released a new FREE EP to Google Play called Burning Bridges to give us a taste of what we can expect from the upcoming album. Here’s what I thought of it…
On “New Beginning” he delivers an impressive spit fire flow where he speaks to the talk of him being washed up. He challenges any rapper to come against him and does so with full confidence. “Money” is a bass heavy, cautionary tale about the love for money and the problems that having it cause. He even mentions his own family member who is suing him over being bitten by Ludacris’s dog, He claims she taunted him and insinuates that she deserved it. He also calls out rappers who say they have millions but are really living beyond their means. I get the impression here that whether Ludacris is rapping or not, he’ll always have some money stacked up. I’m sure his checks from Fast and Furious alone will ensure that. Rick Ross shows up towards the end of the song and offers some credible rhymes that complement the song well.
