The vast majority of the migrants who have crossed the Mediterranean and reached the coast of Europe, will be sent back to the countries from where they departed.

That is the main conclusion from the extraordinary meeting of EU leaders in Brussels on Thursday.

The Guardian, has been given the opportunity to review a draft of the meeting’s conclusions.

More precisely, there will be room for 5,000 migrants/refugees in Europe, while 150,000 who survived the dangerous trip in 2014, will be returned as part of an emergency package to put an end to the massive influx of migrants across the Mediterranean.

According to The Guardian, the EU border agency, Frontex, will be responsible for the returns as part of a larger return program.

Although the trip across the Mediterranean is a dangerous journey – in April this year one of 23 refugees have died, according to Amnesty – the EU will not expand its operations to find and rescue distressed refugees, according to The Guardian.

Instead EU will seek to prevent the refugees from sailing from the African continent. This will be done by military operations to destroy the smugglers’ vessels inspired by experiences from efforts against pirates off the Somali coast.

EU leaders also agrees that it is a tragedy and will do everything to prevent it. EU will therefore make every effort to dismantle the traffickers’ network, and investigate what the main reasons are why people flee from Africa.

Muslim asylum seekers (on way to Italy, of all places) throw Christian passengers overboard in Mediterranean, killing 12

Italian police have arrested a group of asylum seekers after witnesses said they threw 12 passengers overboard following a row about religion on a boat headed to Europe.

According to survivors, the fight broke out after a group of Nigerian and Ghanaian passengers declared they were Christian.
