Urgent: South Africa's 4000 trapped illegal miners must be rescued
I express deep concern over the plight of 4,000 miners trapped in perilous conditions in Stilfontein, North West old mine. Most of these individuals, mostly unemployed Africans, are driven to illegal mining due to poverty and lack of job opportunities.
A Call to Action
DA, Helen Zille urged the South African government to prioritize the rescue of these miners, stressing that arresting and prosecuting them should not take precedence over saving their lives. “Come on. The Minister is talking about human beings here… What happened to Ubuntu?” Zille questioned, highlighting the need for compassion and humanity in the face of this crisis.
The Reality of Illegal Mining
The miners, desperate to escape poverty, are forced to engage in hazardous activities. I blame institutions’ inability to provide jobs or support the poor has led to this situation. I advocated for leniency from the courts, recognizing that poverty is beyond the control of these individuals.
