Massacres of Christians, Druze, and Alawites: Under Fire in Syria

In the midst of the ongoing conflict in Syria, the situation for religious and ethnic minorities has become dire. The Druze faith, an offshoot of Shia Islam, represents a unique identity and belief system that is now facing severe threats. Similarly, Alawites, also known as Alawi or Nusayri, are a heterodox Shia Muslim group with distinct beliefs, and they too find themselves under attack. Syrian Christians, whose numbers range between 300,000 to 500,000, are experiencing a decline due to continual massacres and persecution.

The current regime led by the Jihadist Al-Jolani government is inflicting violence on Druze, Christians, and Alawites. Despite their plight, in 2025, the USA government and the European Union moved to lift sanctions on Al-Jolani’s regime. This move raises concerns about the lack of inclusivity in a government actively engaged in violent acts against non-Muslims and those who do not subscribe to extreme interpretations of Islam.

Druze individuals from Israel are attempting to cross the border illegally to support their brothers and sisters who are being massacred. In Syria, Druze people constitute the majority in the province of Suweida and are armed, but uncertainty looms over how long they can withstand the assaults from Al-Jolani’s militias. Meanwhile, Israel has taken a stand by bombing Al-Jolani military positions in Damascus and Southern Syria, marking itself as the only government trying to intervene and halt the massacres in Syria.

Unity among Christians, Druze, Kurds, and Alawites is crucial for survival in this tumultuous environment. In March 2025, the European Parliament condemned the massacres of Christians and Alawites as an abomination. Since the onset of the conflict in 2011, the European Union and its member states have contributed nearly €37 billion in aid related to the Syrian crisis, showcasing a commitment to addressing the humanitarian needs.

However, jihadist factions continue their campaign of violence, looting from Christians, Alawites, and Druze as part of a broader agenda that does not seek peace. There are grave concerns about the potential for ethnic cleansing of the Druze community within Syria.

It is imperative to voice support for those suffering under fire in Syria. I urge you to reach out to your elected representatives and advocate for practical assistance for the affected communities. There is a need for pressure on the Al-Jolani regime to cease its actions against innocent people.
