The tragic news of two Nigerians, Austin and Ayo, shot dead in Durban, South Africa, by masked attackers has sent shockwaves through the communities affected. This senseless and barbaric act has drawn outrage from the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), who are demanding accountability and action in light of increasing xenophobic violence.

Abike Dabiri-Erewa, the Chairman of NiDCOM, emphasized that a collaborative early warning mechanism had been established between Nigeria and South Africa to address xenophobic tensions. However, she lamented that this system has yet to be fully implemented by the South African government. The failure to act on these agreements raises questions about the commitment to safeguarding foreign nationals, particularly Nigerians who contribute significantly to the South African economy.

In the wake of this violence, Dabiri-Erewa has urged Nigerians living in South Africa to refrain from retaliation. She calls for calm, vigilance, and alertness among the Nigerian community, underscoring the importance of maintaining peace in difficult times. The Nigerian government has officially called for investigations into the murders, highlighting the urgent need for justice.

The context of this violence is further complicated by the fact that South Africa is a host to numerous investments from Nigeria, while many Nigerians have established businesses and livelihoods in South Africa. Yet, the ongoing volatility threatens not only lives but also economic ties between the two nations.

Moreover, the situation for immigrants has worsened, with reports of sick individuals and pregnant women from Mozambique and Zimbabwe being rejected by clinics and hospitals due to the actions of the thuggish Operation Dudula organization. Such brutal acts against vulnerable populations are inexcusable and reflect the pervasive climate of hostility that can flourish without intervention.

Makumbirofa Farms stands in solidarity against xenophobic violence and the persecution of those in need of medical assistance in South African hospitals. We encourage Zimbabwean nationals to reconsider traveling to South Africa under these circumstances, as safety and security are paramount. Our farming projects aim to create jobs and uplift communities, especially as the rainy season approaches, offering a glimmer of hope in troubled times.

As we face these challenging times, remember that what is necessary for evil to triumph is that good men do nothing. Together, we can strive for a future free from violence and hatred.
