Charlie Kirk’s Death – How are We, Followers of Christ, Supposed to Respond?

I will be completely honest, I am researching this information and writing this article for me as well as you. I begin without the answers that I need to deal with what I am feeling right now.

Many of us are saddened to watch the murder of a man who spoke the truth. A man who felt the need to put his own life at risk in order to help many people who were trying to find their way through the spiritual darkness that is taught on many of our campuses.

Charlie connected with these youth. He had the ability to see and explain truth, without all of the deceptive clutter. He had the answers, as to how we could make our nation great again.

He invited God into the equation. He called out moral corruption, and deviation…things that the adversary would want you to believe. He was brave in his approach, and had no interest in being politically correct. Just firm talk regarding what was right.

I must first begin by saying that yesterday, we all made a decision as to who’s team we are committed to. We are either on the side of God, or we support evil, and have chosen satan as our leader. Regardless of what you might think. This is indeed our reality. Can you see with your very own eyes, that we are at war… Good vs Evil?

A towering beacon of light was been snuffed out. Our world has suffered a notable kink in its armor of truth, goodness, love, and guidance. How…Are…We…To…Respond?!?

I invite you to respond to that question in your own mind. What are your thoughts? What do you feel in the appropriate response? Let us discuss this, for I believe that this is a question that many people are searching for the answer to.

Our country is under attack, and we must defend it at all costs. This is indeed the shot heard around the world, as well as the “Final Straw.” This is not the first, but the wake-up call for all of us to do something about it.

I personally feel anger, and rage. I have viewed my “arsenal” while having the feeling of…”It’s time to fight!” This anger for “revenge” has been very prominent in my mind for the past 24 hours. Do you feel something similar to what I have described? My mortal body has responded, and this is my mortal response.

I understand more now, than I have ever known before, that we are indeed in a spiritual war. This is not left vs right… not black vs white… gay vs straight… it is simpler than that… It IS… a WAR between GOOD vs EVIL.

Because of this, I feel that the appropriate thing for me to be doing right now is to ask, learn, and study what my LEADER, Jesus Christ would have me do. This is a war that He is commanding, and I am His soldier. What are my orders?

The King James Version (KJV) of the Bible gives a balanced picture about “fighting back.” It teaches both restraint (trusting God for justice) and, in some cases, the defense of self and others. Here are the main themes:

Turning the Other Cheek – Personal Retaliation

“Jesus taught against personal revenge”. So, this seems to be a fitting topic. What does He command us to do in a situation such as we experienced yesterday with the shooting of Charlie Kirk?

• Matthew 5:38–39 (KJV):
  “Ye have heard that it hath been said, An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth: But I say unto you, That ye resist not evil: but whosoever shall smite thee on thy right cheek, turn to him the other also.”

Wow… really? What does Jesus mean by this? It shows that Christians are called to forgive and not repay evil with evil in personal conflicts. Initially, doesn’t this seem like an impossible thing to do? They took someone very dear to us. Forgive? Don’t repay evil with evil? As hard as this is to accept, I’m intrigued. But, I will certainly need more information for me to consider responding this way. What additional guidance does He give to us?

God’s Role in Vengeance

The Bible reminds us that vengeance belongs to God, not us:

• Romans 12:19 (KJV):
  “Dearly beloved, avenge not yourselves, but rather give place unto wrath: for it is written, Vengeance is mine; I will repay, saith the Lord.”

This scripture hits me deep! Many of us see that we have been wronged, and that we must seek justice to make it right again. Applying this principle as taught by Christ does not eliminate Justice, it simply allows us to turn this situation over to Him, for HE will take care of the matter. “Vengeance is Mine” is exactly how I feel, but He is instructing me to give this to Him.

But did you notice that His response is exactly the same as mine… “Vengeance is Mine”. He has acknowledged the same level of emotions that I am describing. I am not turning this over to God to simply have Him forgive and just let slide. He has a plan to deal with this, and it sound to me that He has a “Whoopin’” planned for someone.

So, when we are wronged, we are urged to let God hand out the ultimate justice. Knowing that He uses the word “Vengeance” is telling me that He will take care of things, and He understands the depth of my sorrow for being so wronged by the enemy.

Let’s continue learning, for this is helpful for me right now…

Defending Yourself and Others

Understanding the guidance that we have just been given above, is there ever a time when it would be appropriate to “Fight Back”? The answer is… YES. The teaching of Jesus Christ in the Bible does not forbid all forms of defense. For instance:

• Luke 22:36 (KJV):
  Jesus said to His disciples: “…he that hath no sword, let him sell his garment, and buy one.”

This implies there is a place for self-defense and protection, especially in dangerous times.

• Exodus 22:2 (KJV):
  “If a thief be found breaking up, and be smitten that he die, there shall no blood be shed for him.”

The law recognized the right to defend one’s home. Can you see the difference here? Reacting out of “vengeance” is something that needs to be settled between Christ and that person, not us taking that responsibility.

If our children, ourselves, or others are in danger, we have been told through this scripture, “…he that hath no sword, let him sell his garment, and buy one.” Defending others who are in danger is an appropriate response… We should own a “Sword” for this purpose.

You will notice that there are not any specifics tied to this defense. I don’t believe that anything further is required to establish what He meant by this. I feel very comfortable in suggesting that we defend against a threat until that threat is not longer a “threat.” And, in some cases, a defense might simply be to remove yourself and others from the situation.

This defense is an instinct I believe. Reacting while defending is an automatic response for us, and can not be scripted. We have been given the green light to have a “sword,” and if you are like me, you will begin each day asking for guidance and protection. Following our thoughts at that moment could be considered in following the direction that God would have us do.

So, we’ve discussed a PHYSICAL response in dealing with the enemy, but there is also another side to this battle.

Spiritual Warfare

The New Testament shifts much of the focus to spiritual battles, not physical ones. I can see this quite clearly in our world.

• Ephesians 6:12 (KJV):
  “For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.”

Let’s take this thinking even further. Do we see the war between good and evil as a minor event in our lives? Or, do we actually realize and believe that our very souls are at stake here in this battle? Satan is trying to lure us away from God and would have us join his team in serving him. Do you know this? It is YOU that he is after. This is personal, and not just a battle in a faraway land.

In this spiritual battle, believers are called to fight with the armor of God (truth, righteousness, faith, the Word). We are to realize that we also have “Spiritual Swords” that are necessary and helpful in this battle.

Do you have FAITH in giving this shooting to Jesus Christ to deal with, or will you let this event engulf you in rage, making it easier for satan and his angles to sway you towards their side?

That’s an entirely new thought, isn’t it? Is my raging response actually a win for the other team? Sadly, I think that it just might be. I certainly do not want that!!!!! This point needs to be one of deep consideration in preparing our battle plan.

So, in wrapping this up, what have we learned? We have learned that we should not “fight back” with vengeance or hatred. Doing so will give the other team the advantage. Evil thoughts and feelings are from…humm..satan.

We should trust God to bring justice, and that even he will deal with this issue with “Vengeance”. He feels the same way about the shooting as we do, and He has a plan to handle it.

There are times when defending your life, and others, from harm is not condemned. We can use our own understanding to determine what this means to us. There may be some of you reading this who have decided that they would not even turn to an aggressive defense in protecting those that they love. There are others who see that defending others, even to the point of harming or taking someone’s life, would be an appropriate response. We have learned that both of these interpretations are appropriate with God.

I have found great comfort in putting this writing together. I can see the wisdom in the teachings of Christ. There is an appropriate time to defend vs a time to turn things over to Christ Himself.

Now, I invite you to prayerfully take this information to God in prayer and receive your own guidance with these scriptures. In doing so, you will find a relief from the HATE that you might be feeling, or the injustice right now.

You will also have all of the information needed to make your own plan of how you intend to respond to yesterday’s event. You might see things differently that I have described. You might feel the need to defend our country, rather than turn this citation offer to Christ. If that is what you feel, and it has been confirmed to you by God Himself, I understand and support any prayerful decision that you receive.

I began this research wanting to know how to satisfy two conflicting things that I was trying to process: How should I do my part as a citizen of the United States in protecting and defending this great country -vs- How can I ensure that I do not lower myself through my actions in becoming just the same as the enemy? I have found the answer, and again encourage you to do the same.

We are warriors of Christ. We need to do all that we can in protecting our family from the enticing’s of satan and his team. We realize that this is the purpose of the battle… “Our Very Souls.” We will not let rage, anger, and vengeance destroy us from inside, making us “easy prey” for the enemy. God does not need us to do His Physical Battle, for He already has that in His plan, and will defeat evil for good, during the Battle of Armageddon.

We will defend ourselves, and those that we love through a plan that we have established in our minds and heart, confirmed by God through prayer.

We will also recognize that others are either on the side of God, or on the side of satan. We will be cautious in dealing with those who are on the “losing” team, for we know that they will become desperate with time running out.

We recognize the need to give situations, that give us the emotion of “Vengeance,” to Christ for Justice to be served. This is not a display of weakness on our part, but rather, the way that our “Commander” would like us to respond. We will honor His direction.

Something else that we will incorporate into our life…We will realize that we are just a few short years away from being with God in “Heaven.” This is the Peacefull, Loving, environment that we have been seeking here on earth, and much, much more. This is the result that we will receive from our “fighting”. This is the “neighborhood” that we have been seeking. This will be our “Reward.” Understanding this is worth the sacrifices that we have made here on earth.

We are not just entering this battle in a mortal sense. We recognize that we are participating under the scope of the “Big Picture.” ETERNITY! A sacrifice now, even to the extent of losing our life, is only a blip in time, and then we will immediately be placed in this eternal setting of living with Christ and those whom we love.

Let us keep our eye on this prize. Let us also know that satan’s team will sadly live forever in the “Lake of Fire” miserable forever… (Right now, I find joy in that thought, but will continue to pray that I might overcome this feeling).
