∞Still Stranded in Remote Areas

The Zimbabwean government sympathises with its citizens and has repatriated more than 300 people from Cape Town, South Africa. They fled townships across the city in fear for their lives and gathered outside the Zimbabwean Consulate in Zonnebloem — desperate, frightened, and with nowhere else to turn.

The Zimbabwean government responded with buses and humanitarian aid to men, women, and children who were in desperation after being chased away by xenophobic South Africans. It was a government that heard the cries of its people and moved. But for every person who made it to that consulate, there are many more who did not.

“My source in Cape Town told me that a group of South Africans is doing door-to-door service — damaging the property of foreigners and telling them to leave.”

This is not a rumour. This is not speculation. This is a coordinated campaign of terror being carried out house by house, street by street, against people whose only crime is being foreign. Zimbabweans and other foreign nationals are still under fire in South Africa. There are still many in remote parts of the country who desperately need help.

Poor Women, Children and Men — Their Lives Are at Risk

These are poor women, children, and men, worried about their lives. They need to get to areas where they can get help. Their lives are at risk in South Africa. Right now — today — there are people hiding in places where no bus has come, where no government has responded, where no one is coming.

There is possible violence and bloodshed coming in the days and weeks ahead. South African law enforcement services will fail to contain the violence — they have already shown they lack either the will or the capacity to do so. The window to act is closing.

The Zimbabwean government has shown what a government that cares about its people looks like. It sent buses. It sent aid. It brought its people home. Now every other government whose nationals remain trapped in South Africa must do the same. And the South African government must answer for why its own citizens are doing door-to-door raids, destroying property, and driving human beings from their homes.
