Micah 7:14-15
With shepherd’s crook,
O Lord, lead your people to pasture,
the flock that is your heritage,
living confined in a forest
with meadow land all around.
A reflection on Micah
based upon growing up in 1970’s Birmingham,
Irish parents, Catholic, inner-city poverty,
aspirations of faith in God who is a loving Shepherd.
Looking back and being grateful for memory and eternal hope.
Diggers and Spades
Weather-stained bricks of Birmingham buildings, dirty, dusty
Old, twisted metal nails adorning outside walls, worn, rusty
The early 1970’s sitting in the rubble of decay, a child playing
Outside from dawn until the dark, a head full of wild imagining
New buildings were living side by side with the old ones in tatters
Diggers and spades flashed upon new roads as progress matters
Irish immigrant sown in the heart, worn in hand me down clothes
Blissfully unaware of “no Irish” consequences of prejudice’s woes
Hate walked the city, hid in plain sight, plotted death and destruction
Bombs ignited upon innocent souls, engaged in simple conversation
When I think back, I knew nothing I was young and naive at the seams
Today the city buildings are still being built, higher and pricier it seems
I seek constantly the meadows of pasture following the Good Shepherd
My life’s journey punctuated with fulfilment; the wisdom of Christ’s word
Tolerance is a key for opening the door to change, but when will we learn
We are brothers and sisters together, building a future, our major concern
Poverty still stalks this city, compassionate voices struggle to find free air
Yet breath indicates life, we breathe hope, discovering people do still care.
