Vocations Seeds
Matthew 13:31-32
Jesus put a parable before the crowds: ‘The kingdom of heaven is like a mustard seed which a man took and sowed in his field. It is the smallest of all the seeds, but when it has grown it is the biggest shrub of all and becomes a tree so that the birds of the air come and shelter in its branches.’
Some things start off small and grow. A reflection upon the small seed of vocation planted in the heart.
Vocation Seeds
When I was younger
I was gripped by a fever
As it turned out, double pneumonia
I took a ride in an ambulance
Arriving to a blur of corridors, noises, needles and reassurance
A priest in black appeared, hovered over me called me an angel
I did not know if I should have been scared or meekly grateful
Did the vocation seed grow for me then, anointed in sickness
Touched by grace, a glimpse of sanctity, a desire for holiness
I will never know for sure
Heaven grants a providential cure
Years later sat deep in prayer upon a wooden church pew
Looking towards the crucifix, hearing words “Christ died for you”
Silence steered my fretful teenage heart towards a path of vocation
Quietening the protest, igniting the flames of a divine conversation
So, 34 years a priest this July, the seeds remain to sprout, to grow
The branches of the eucharist shelter hearts resting in his shadow.
