Homemade Instant Maple Oats

Homemade Instant Maple Oats
Homemade Instant Maple Oats. Sometimes you are looking for a quick and simple breakfast that goes together without a lot of effort.  Instant oatmeal provides a hearty breakfast, but if you are like me, you don’t really want to use the prepared packages of it that you find in the store. Usually, they are loaded with sugar and salt, things we really don’t want to be eating, or that at the very least we want to control ourselves.
I saw this recipe for homemade instant oats on a page called Completely Delicious, and I was instantly intrigued. Homemade instant oats???  Count me in!
I did make a few adaptations.

Homemade Instant Maple Oats
I did cut the recipe in half to make a smaller amount for my small family, which consists of just me!  I also had some maple sugar in the house and decided to use that instead of brown sugar.  I love maple flavored anything and if any kind of instant oats might tempt me, it would be the maple one!
If you are wanting the larger sized recipe, simply double the amounts of ingredients mentioned here today.  Feel free to add other things that you might like, such as raisins, toasted nuts, dried cranberries, chocolate chips, dried apples, cinnamon, etc.   Today I added some sultanas. I love raisins in my oatmeal.
I do like my oats a bit thicker, so I cooked it for an additional 30 seconds in the microwave.  I also like to drizzle a bit of cold milk or cream on top.
Additionally, you can break this down into single serving sized packets.  Just measure out single servings into zip lock baggies.  Include on them the instructions on how to make the oatmeal.  (Easily done with a black pen on a piece of masking tape.)
I really hope that you will be tempted to give this a go. I think that you will really enjoy it, or at least I hope that you will.  I know I certainly did!

WHAT YOU NEED TO MAKE HOMEMADE INSTANT MAPLE OATS
Four simple ingredients and every bit as delicious, if not more so than the store-bought packets.
  • 2 1/2 cups (250g) old fashioned oats
  • 1/3 cup (52g) Maple sugar (alternately you can use 1/4 cup/50g soft light brown sugar, packed)
  • 1/4 cup (21g) powdered milk
  • 1/2 tsp salt

Homemade Instant Maple Oats
I love old fashioned large flake oatmeal. It’s the only oatmeal I keep in the house.  This will be broken down in the food processor to something which will cook a lot faster.  How much more delicious is an oatmeal that you process yourself.
I used maple sugar, but you could use brown sugar, coconut sugar, etc. Its up to you. I know that not everyone has maple sugar available to them.
Powdered milk is usually found in the canned milk or baking section of the grocery store. It is usually a low-fat product.  Keep it in the freezer if you think you won’t get it used up quick enough.

HOW TO MAKE HOMEMADE INSTANT MAPLE OATS
This is a lot easier than one would think.  Why not skip the store-bought packets and make your own! Especially when it is as simple to make as this is!
Measure the oatmeal into the bowl of a food processor. Pulse four to five times. Remove 2/3 of the oats and then pulse the remainder into a powder.
Pour all of the oats into a bowl. Whisk in the powdered milk, maple sugar and the salt, until well combined.
Store in a large airtight container. You can optionally separate into individual servings, stored in zip-lock baggies. This should keep for one to two months.

Homemade Instant Maple Oats

When you are ready to cook your oatmeal, give the jar a good shake to make sure things are still evenly distributed. Measure out 1/2 cup into a bowl and whisk in 1/2 to 3/4 cup of boiling water, giving everything a good stir together. (See notes.)
I like mine to be a bit on the thicker side, so I pop it into the microwave for 30 seconds and then I like to drizzle a bit of full fat milk over top.

Notes

Feel free to add some additional ingredients to your oats according to what you enjoy. Chocolate chips, raisins, dried cranberries, dried sour cherries, toasted nuts, diced dried apple, cinnamon, etc.

Feel free to use soft light brown sugar instead of maple sugar, or coconut sugar.  You know what you enjoy most so adapt this recipe to suit your own likes and tastes!

Homemade Instant Maple Oats
I was amazed at just how simple this was to make and how very adaptable. I will never buy packets of instant oatmeal again.  Not when making your own from scratch is so easy and so delicious!
Not to mention, unprocessed.  These days I am trying to stay as far away from ultra processed food as I can. This makes a lovely simple breakfast that goes together quickly on those days when you don’t have a lot of time!

Homemade Instant Maple Oats
Are you looking for a variety of delicious yet simple breakfast options?  Why not consider the following tasty dishes!
ONE PAN BREAKFAST This easy one pan breakfast is a play on the old Egg in the Hole breakfast that we all enjoyed as children.  There is one major difference, however.  This version is not fried, its baked. Another major difference is that it bakes on a baking sheet with breakfast potatoes and sausages.  An entire breakfast all on one pan. No fuss no muss and very little to clean up.

BIG BRAN BREAKFAST COOKIES – I try to have something with bran in it every day.  Some days it is bran cereal, others it might be one of my bran muffins. Some days it is one of these delicious Big Bran Breakfast Cookies! A yummy, Big Bran Breakfast Cookie! These are a most delicious way to get some fiber into the diet!
