Crippling over-correction of rapid industrialization taking place on a global scale

In recent years a few wide-awake economists and scientists pointed out that rapid industrialization of the world would eventually destroy industrialization, but everyone else either ignored these predictions or scoffed at the idea. Some scientists argued that the situation will be self-correcting, that the process will reach equilibrium where the factors that limit further expansion automatically counterbalance the factors that expand or allow industrialization. So for example if industrialization begins to over-exploit and deplete the earth’s forests, fish, arable land, fossil fuels etc until there are insufficient resources for everyone to live and thrive, only those less competitive and less skilled in survival techniques will die off until the demand again meets available supply. But another process is ignored in that argument. It’s now being acknowledged that many limiting factors only take effect after a time lag, so the full force of limitation occurs after the potential force has grown beyond the point of balance and therefore industrialized societies will collapse.

Too little too late to save the planet

In the example mentioned before, children make very little demand on resources and facilities when they are born into the world. But 20 years later when those tiny tops are grown up brutes and want everything that their parents have it will be too late to tell them they can’t because they are too little. Fishing banks that were depleted by commercial fishing and turned into reservations are taking up to 20 years to recover; and loss of top soil in arable lands through wind and water erosion as a result of mechanized ploughing and over-stocking will take a lot more than 20 years to be restored. Planned conservation is slowly falling behind commercial exploitation either through the growth of illegal harvesting or through over-permitting by corrupt government officials. Serious efforts to clean up polluted rivers and deltas, toxic landfills and radioactive or heavy metals in the food chain will not begin until the incidence of cancer seriously impacts life expectancy. People will continue to die long after the clean up process begins. This isn’t speculation – these are the facts of the matter.

The short-lived freedom and prosperity of our generation

In previous centuries the elite ruling class realized that by enabling each member of society to become more skilled, industrious and prosperous, the rulers became more wealthy and powerful. So policies and manpower were devoted to developing the skills and expanding the work potential and earning power for all in the interests of everyone. But now that industrialization has taken off in virtually every part of the globe, the process is putting stress on the earth’s resources and needs to be slowed or even reversed. But forcing populations into oppression and hard work after they have enjoyed relative freedom and prosperity is not as easy as keeping them oppressed and hard at work. The cat has been let out of the bag. 

Those few who were ringing the alarm bells were correct and many more are now repeating the message:  Our civilization is starting to see a massive over-correction of the destructive power of rapid industrialization – an escalation of wars, famine, disease, anxiety disorders and addictions, revolutions and tyranny on a global scale. It’s time to head for the exit.
