An Open Letter to His Excellency

President Cyril Ramaphosa

Your Excellency, Mr. President,

We hereby respectfully call upon you to exercise the moral and constitutional authority that has been entrusted to you to lead South Africa. Your Excellency, we recognize that you are indeed striving to serve the best interests of our nation, and we acknowledge that the social challenges confronting our country are extraordinarily complex and multifaceted.

We urgently petition you: to intervene decisively in halting the violence and organized marches targeting undocumented foreign nationals across our country.

Mr. President, as you are well aware, these demonstrations and vigilante actions are resulting in the loss of innocent human life and the destruction of small businesses and livelihoods that belong to vulnerable members of our society. The collateral damage—looting, arson, and displacement—extends suffering far beyond those initially targeted and threatens the social cohesion upon which our nation depends.

We believe that morally and constitutionally, you have both the authority and the obligation to restrict these marches and prevent violence against human life in all its forms.

We do not contest your government’s right to enforce immigration law or manage documented status. Indeed, we recognize the need for orderly processes. However, our prayer and our plea is that compassion accompany enforcement—that those who are undocumented receive treatment befitting human dignity. The circumstances of poverty and displacement across Africa are dire; many seek only survival and basic sustenance.

Mr. President, we implore you to move forward boldly in your commitment to protecting human life from all forms of violence. The entire African continent and the watching world are observing how South Africa—a nation that emerged from oppression to inscribe dignity in its Constitution—will respond to this crisis.

The decisions made in this moment will define South Africa’s moral character for generations to come. We trust in your leadership.

In closing, we express our gratitude for the principled and steadfast leadership you bring to some of the most difficult challenges facing any nation in our time. Your efforts to build a more just and inclusive South Africa are noted and appreciated.
