Pieter Buys Attacked: A Call for The Death Penalty for Attacking White Farmers in South Africa

A Deerpark farmer near Tzaneen is recovering at home after surviving a brutal panga attack on his own property — an incident that has reignited urgent calls for the courts to treat violence against farmers with the severity it deserves.
According to reporting by the Letaba Herald, Pieter Buys was switching off irrigation pumps on the morning of Friday, June 26, when he noticed an unfamiliar man on his land. He called two of his employees for backup and approached the man himself. When confronted, the man claimed to be searching for cattle — an explanation Buys found suspicious, since the property is enclosed by game fencing.

As Buys turned to check on his approaching workers, the man produced a panga and struck him twice on the back of the head. Buys did not go down. When the attacker moved to strike a third time, aiming for his face, Buys grabbed the blade with both hands, seized the man by his clothing, and held him until his employees arrived to help restrain him.
Buys was rushed to Tzaneen Mediclinic by his wife. He has since been discharged and is recovering at home, describing one large wound running from the top of his head down into his neck, and significant blood loss. A suspect appeared in the Tzaneen Magistrate’s Court on Monday, June 29. Police investigations continue.
Agri Letaba, reacting to the incident, condemned the violence and called on farmers and rural communities to strengthen ties with local safety structures — Farm Watches, community policing forums, and rural safety committees — as a frontline defence against attacks like this one.

This attack is not an isolated case. It is part of a documented pattern of violence against farmers and farmworkers in South Africa and Zimbabwe, gathered directly through Makumbirofa Farms’ advocacy network — attacks that too often end in death, and where accountability lags far behind the scale of the harm.
Farmers feed the nation. They deserve priority protection under the law — not sympathy after the fact, but sentencing that reflects the gravity of what’s done to them. Justice delayed for our farmers is justice denied for all of us. White farmers have suffered violence for too long. Many have been murdered. Therefore, the death penalty must be implemented for attacking farmers and any other violent crime.
