They have been chased away by South Africans in townships. They used to stay together in township houses, shelters and some in the shacks.
As life becomes hard due to unemployment and hardship, some hate-filled South Africans began to threaten these foreign nationals. Some fled on their own due to safety concerns as they see foreigners being targeted and killed in South Africa.
They read reports of five murdered Mozambicans in KwaZulu-Natal. They read reports of five murdered Malawians in Mossel Bay, and hundreds injured when black South Africans attacked.
This is the plight of 2,000 stranded Zimbabwean mothers and babies outside the Zimbabwean Consulate in Cape Town.
They need food, medicine and buses to go back home where it is safe.
Gift of the Givers, a South African NGO, has been helping some with food and blankets.
There are still many Zimbabweans in remote parts of South Africa who need help to go back home. They risk being killed by raging South Africans.
Many are hiding, and some have no money to get to the big cities where there are Zimbabwean embassies.
Africans in surrounding countries are angry at the violence, xenophobia, looting and murder of their brothers and sisters in South Africa.
Whites and some black South Africans are vehemently opposing this orchestrated violence against vulnerable foreigners. These are not criminals but poor people.

Julius Malema has mobilised his political party, the EFF, in parts of South Africa to counter violence against foreigners on 30 June 2026.
“When a foreigner resides among you in your land, do not mistreat them. The foreigner residing among you must be treated as your native-born. Love them as yourself.”Leviticus 19:33–34
