Mamdani, Uber & Lyft — Thousands of Workers Impacted as NYC Erupts in Chaos! (Video)

In this 30 October 2026 published video, host Cash Jordan about how New York City is going after Uber, Lyft and the apps New Yorkers depend on to get around – and the workers caught in the middle are the ones paying for it. A Citi Bike ride that cost $4.50 in 2020 now costs $12.15. The cheapest rideshare app in town just got called “illegal.” DoorDash was hit with a record $131.5 million settlement. And now Uber, Lyft, Amazon and Instacart are taking City Hall to federal court.

In this video, we break down Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s fight with the gig economy: who is really pushing prices up, why the cheapest ride in New York is being treated like a crime, what happens to the drivers and delivery workers who lose access to the apps, and who ends up covering the bill. Spoiler: it’s you.

As a New York State Assemblyman and progressive mayoral candidate, Mamdani has advocated for stronger protections for delivery and rideshare workers, as well as strict caps on corporate apps. He does not possess the unilateral authority to ban any company from operating in New York City.

While there is no ban, there is real tension. Uber and Lyft have historically fought New York City over regulatory hurdles, including minimum pay rates and vehicle caps, leading to high-profile lawsuits and periodic driver strikes protesting wage splits.

The controversy stems from a New York City Council law (Local Law 52) that requires ride-hailing companies to provide 14 days’ notice and show a “bona fide economic reason” before deactivating a driver (except in cases of severe public safety threats). Uber and Lyft sued New York City over the law. In July 2026, a federal judge blocked the enforcement of the rule, ruling that the city could not force the companies to wait before deactivating drivers.

A federal judge blocked New York City from enforcing Local Law 52, which would have required ride-share companies to provide advance notice and “just cause” before deactivating drivers. Uber and Lyft filed separate federal lawsuits in Manhattan against New York City, arguing the law unconstitutionally impaired their existing contracts, violated due process and free speech rights, and compromised platform safety by forcing them to retain unsafe drivers. U.S. District Judge Gregory H. Woods of the Southern District of New York granted a preliminary injunction halting the law just before it was set to take effect. The judge ruled that Uber and Lyft were likely to succeed on their Contracts Clause claims because the city law stripped platforms of their final authority over safety and driver deactivations. The injunction put a temporary freeze on the city’s enforcement and paused related compliance expansion plans.

Opinions on the ruling are split, as seen on Reddit: some argue the block preserves the independent contractor model and platform safety, while others feel drivers urgently need protection against sudden deactivations from false or unverified rider complaint. New York City is appealing the ruling.
