U.S. employers announced 71,321 job cuts in November 2025, according to Challenger, Gray & Christmas. This brings the total number of announced layoffs in 2025 to over 1.17 million, the highest year-to-date figure since the 2020 pandemic-induced layoffs, and a level typically seen during recession years.
The U.S. labor market is exhibiting mixed and concerning signals, leading to increased talks of a potential recession, though official data on the total number of nonfarm payrolls still shows slight growth.
While the labor market is clearly weakening, the official nonfarm payroll numbers from the BLS (which showed 119k jobs added in September) have not yet aligned with the stark data from private firms like Challenger and ADP, which reported job losses in September and a high volume of cuts in November. The Federal Reserve is closely monitoring these signals as it considers future interest rate cuts to stabilize the economy.
