Buyers Are Abandoning the Housing Market at the Highest Rate Ever (Video)
In this 31 January 2026 video, host Michael Bordenaro talks about how recent data confirms a significant shift in the U.S. housing market as of early 2026, with buyers increasingly “abandoning” deals due to a combination of high costs and newfound leverage. In December 2025, approximately 16.3 percent of homes under contract had their purchase agreements canceled—the highest December rate since tracking began in 2017. This represents over 40,000 canceled deals nationwide.
Home sellers outnumber buyers by a record margin, with roughly 47 percent more sellers in the market than active buyers in late 2025. This surplus allows buyers to be more selective, often walking away if they cannot secure price concessions or if inspection issues arise. Also many sellers are not lowering prices to meet cautious demand, choosing instead to delist their homes. Nearly 85,000 listings (about 5.5 percent of the total) were pulled from the market in September 2025 alone as sellers refused to settle for lower offers.
