Florida has become the epicenter for severe consumer debt distress in the United States.

Based on Federal Reserve Bank data, Florida ranks No. 1 in the nation for the share of residents who are at least 90 days behind on overall debt payments. Economists consider a 90-day delinquency a critical tipping point that usually leads to an uncontainable personal financial downward spiral. The primary drivers are local wages failing to keep up with the post-pandemic cost-of-living surge, coupled with heavy reliance on credit cards and personal loans to sustain households. 

The post-pandemic housing boom in the Sunshine State has officially reversed into a notable correction. Florida closed out the previous year with the highest foreclosure rate in the country (0.44 percent of all residential properties). This trend has persisted heavily, with Florida ranking consistently in the top three worst-hit states. Metropolitan areas like Lakeland and Punta Gorda have recently recorded the highest foreclosure rates of any cities nationwide. Homeowners who bought properties at the peak of the market with higher mortgage rates are defaulting due to compounding, exponential spikes in homeowners insurance premiums and property taxes. Home values on Florida’s West Coast (such as Charlotte and Lee counties) have dropped by double digits year-over-year, leaving many recent buyers with negative equity. 

The financial strain isn’t limited to households; Florida’s business environment is also experiencing a sharp contraction. Florida ranks second highest in the nation for business bankruptcy filings. Commercial bankruptcy filings in the state spiked by 86.6 percent over a three-year period.  Businesses heavily reliant on short-term borrowing are buckling under sustained high interest rates and softening local consumer spending. 

While these metrics indicate localized financial trauma, economists emphasize that the current trajectory represents a severe market stabilization and correction rather than a full-scale repeat of the 2008 financial crash. Most homeowners still possess significant equity buffers from the 2020–2022 appreciation wave, preventing a wider systemic collapse.
