Gen Alpha Can't Read (Video)

In this 24 April 2026 published video, host Blair White talks about there is a growing, widespread concern among educators, backed by some data, that Gen Alpha (those born roughly 2010–present) is experiencing a literacy crisis characterized by lower reading proficiency, stamina, and comprehension compared to previous generations. While it is an oversimplification to say they literally cannot read at all, many are struggling to read at grade level.

Data shows reading performance for fourth graders has hit its lowest level since 2005, with international assessments (PISA) showing declines across many developed nations. Some estimates suggest that a significant portion of students are reading two or three grade levels below expectations. One estimate suggests around 40 percent of kids may not be reading at a basic level, and roughly 70 percent of low-income fourth graders are struggling, according to 2024-2025 literacy statistics.

Many Gen Alpha kids can read, but they lack the ability to engage in complex reading, such as analyzing arguments or understanding figurative language. They are often used to reading short-form text (social media) rather than long-form content.

Foundational literacy skills were developed during school shutdowns and remote learning, which hindered progress for many current students. High reliance on digital devices and social media (TikTok/YouTube Shorts) is cited as a major factor, reducing attention spans and discouraging the cognitive effort required to read books. Teachers report that students have low “cognitive patience”,struggling to focus on texts longer than a few seconds or sentences. Some argue that teaching methods, such as the “whole language” method or the removal of heavy phonics instruction, have contributed to the decline.

Teachers have reported students trying to “scroll” or “swipe” physical books, showing a high level of discomfort with traditional paper media. Some students struggle to hold pens or form letters properly. Many students lose interest after just a few pages, lacking the stamina to read in-depth. While some observers suggest this represents a “dumbing down” of society or a direct failure of digital-first learning, others argue it is a sign that education must adapt to new media formats or that a strong return to traditional, phonics-based instruction is necessary to fix the reading gap.

How could a human being not know their own name??
Even if it’s just a certain grunt or whistle, there’s a feral factor in a human who doesn’t know their own name.
