BioLargo Inc. (BLGO:OTCQX) announces that an independent evaluation has validated significant benefits of its Cellinity battery technology for use in grid-scale energy storage systems. Read why the report says the product is positioned as a “potential solution for critical gaps in grid-scale energy storage markets.”

BioLargo Inc. (BLGO:OTCQX) announced that an independent evaluation has validated significant benefits of its Cellinity battery technology for use in grid-scale energy storage systems.

The assessment was conducted by U.S. BESS Corp., a leading provider of advanced energy storage solutions tailored for critical infrastructure across utilities, defense, microgrids, and heavy industry, BioLargo said.

“Based on our inspection and the evidence provided, U.S. BESS finds that the Cellinity Cell demonstrates a sufficient performance profile, with strong indications of high thermal stability, efficiency, energy and power density, and material sustainability, to suggest further investment in testing and commercialization,” the report said. “These attributes position this technology as a potential solution for critical gaps in grid-scale energy storage markets.”

The senior technical team at U.S. BESS performed a comprehensive review of Cellinity’s design and assembly processes, inspected the testing infrastructure, analyzed data from test results, and evaluated the methodologies employed for performance characterization. They concluded that the following performance metrics, exclusive of any auxiliary systems, are corroborated by their findings and are reasonably indicative of the current performance of the Cellinity cell:

  • Open circuit voltage: > 4.2 V
  • Operating temperature range: from 120°C to 250°C
  • Energy density: > 500 Wh/kg (calculated based on active materials)
  • Power density: > 500 mW/cm³ (maximum observed value of 1579 W/kg at 230°C)
  • Charge capacity: The cell can be charged to 100% of its theoretical capacity
  • Charge/discharge efficiency: ~100%
  • Energy efficiency: 95% at 230°C; 87% at 120°C
  • Self-discharge: No measurable self-discharge observed over the testing periods
  • Thermal cycling durability: Performance remains stable after repeated cycling

U.S. BESS Corp. further determined that it is reasonable to assert that: a) the cell would not undergo thermal runaway, b) the materials used in its construction are commonly available and can be sourced domestically, c) the cell does not incorporate rare earth elements, and d) the components of the cell are fully recyclable.

A Crucial Part of Introducing Product to Market

BioLargo Inc.

BioLargo is made up of subsidiaries that work in different sectors, a “family of companies,” including ONM Environmental, BioLargo Engineering, BioLargo Water, BioLargo Energy Technologies, Clyra Medical Technologies, and the new BioLargo Equipment Solutions & Technologies Inc. (BEST) subsidiary.

ONM Environmental includes Pooph, the company’s wildly successful consumer pet odor line; Clyra Medical Technologies includes its copper-iodine wound irrigation solution, Bioclynse; and BioLargo Energy developed the Cellinity.

“BioLargo is yet another of our story ‘story stocks’ you should be doubling down on,” Chris Temple of The National Investor wrote.

U.S. BESS offers energy storage solutions across a variety of applications, including utilities, industrial sectors, microgrids, and defense. With years of combined expertise in battery engineering, microgrid implementation, system-level integration, and manufacturing, the company’s leadership team is exceptionally well-suited for the battery energy storage system sector. U.S. BESS is in the process of developing the most sophisticated and secure battery management system, as well as establishing the largest domestic battery supply network in the United States.

“Our efforts to scale up the cell design, improve manufacturing processes, and integrate cells into a functional module for commercial testing are currently in progress,” Chief Executive Dennis P. Calvert said. “We are not aware of any long-duration energy storage technology that can compare to Cellinity’s technical assertions regarding cost-effective performance and safety. This third-party assessment is a crucial element of our strategy to introduce Cellinity to the market through manufacturing partnerships.”

Calvert continued, “We are actively pursuing several of these collaborations with potential partners and look forward to providing more updates on those developments soon.”

The Catalysts: AI, Green Energy

The global demand for grid-scale energy storage is swiftly increasing to accommodate rising loads driven by advancements in artificial intelligence, decarbonization goals, and the accelerated uptake of renewable energy. In 2024 alone, the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) reported a 66% increase in battery energy storage capacity in the U.S. Although lithium-ion batteries currently dominate this sector, they pose several challenges, including fire hazards due to thermal runaway, efficiency declines over time, and sourcing issues related to rare and critical minerals.

BioLargo said its Cellinity battery technology addresses these challenges by utilizing innovative materials and designs to provide exceptional thermal performance and operational efficiency without relying on rare earth elements.

The world’s electricity consumption in total is forecast to rise at its fastest pace in recent years, growing at close to 4% annually through 2027 as power use climbs in a range of sectors across the economy, according to a February IEA report.

“The growth in global demand will be the equivalent of adding an amount greater than Japan’s annual electricity consumption every year between now and 2027,” the agency noted. The surge is primarily driven by robust growing use of electricity for industrial production, increased demand for air conditioning, accelerating electrification, led by the transport sector, and the rapid expansion of data centers.”

In the United States, the total capacity for large-scale battery storage surpassed 26 gigawatts (GW) in 2024, as detailed in EIA’s January 2025 Preliminary Monthly Electric Generator Inventory. During that year, generators contributed an additional 10.4 GW of battery storage capacity, marking the second-largest increase in generating capability following solar energy. Despite the rapid expansion of battery storage, it represented just 2% of the total 1,230 GW of utility-scale electricity generation capacity within the country in 2024. [OWNERSHIP_CHART-6976]

Looking ahead to 2025, the growth in battery storage could potentially reach new heights, with operators indicating intentions to incorporate 19.6 GW of large-scale battery storage into the electrical grid, as reflected in our January 2025 preliminary electric generator inventory data, the agency said.

Battery storage systems do not serve as a primary electricity source, since they do not generate power from fuels or natural resources, the EIA pointed out. Rather, these systems function by storing electricity that has already been produced by an electricity generator or sourced from the electric power grid, categorizing energy storage systems as secondary electricity sources.

Ownership and Share Structure

According to Refinitiv, management and insiders own 14% of BioLargo. The Top 3 are Chief Science Officer Kenneth Code with 8.33%, CEO Dennis Calvert with 3.27% and Director Jack Strommen with 1.62%.

The company’s one institutional investor, First American Trust, holds 0.04%. The rest is in retail.

BioLargo has 301.78M outstanding shares and 259.59M free float traded shares. Its market cap is $64.02. Its 52-week range is $0.16–0.32 per share.
