Falling For Leelah James
Leelah James is one of those artists that is quiet as kept – and has been for several years now. But it’s definitely not due to a lack of talent. Her voice is a strong, confident, sultry and boisterous whirlwind, all in one breath. Although her debut album, A Change Is Gonna Come, was released in 2006, she has the presence of a veteran who’s been around in the music business for much longer than that. She cites Al Green, Etta James and Chaka Khan as some of her musical influences and that sound can definitely be heard on her fourth and new album, Fall for You. Fall for You smoothly channels the slick and jagged edges of love and all it entails.
“Who’s Gonna Love You More?”, the album’s opening track, has an old school R & B sound, as does much of the album. The song is an up-tempo declaration that finds Leelah James boldly telling her lover that no one else will love him quite like she can. “Say That” featuring Anthony Hamilton follows closely behind on a lighter note, but no less impactful. She’s pleading and hoping that her lover wants and needs her in the same way that she needs him. Her voice is silky here and weaves in and out of Anthony Hamilton’s vocals very well. He was definitely the perfect choice to collaborate with on this song.
