Looking After Yourself: Keep a medical aid box of essential medicines at home

To survive in a world with limited medical care, such as in the UK, it’s essential to have a well-equipped medical aid box at home, Dr. Vernon Coleman says.

Two of the must-haves in your medical box are an EpiPen and antibiotics.  Dr. Coleman also recommends you keep a copy of the first aid book ‘The Ship Captain’s Medical Guide’.

The following essay is an abbreviated version of an Appendix in `The End of Medicine’ by Vernon Coleman.

In order to survive in the New World (which won’t have much in the way of doctors or hospitals), you need a well-equipped medical cabinet box in your home. Don’t keep it in the bathroom, by the way. Bathrooms tend to be damp and the worst place in the world to keep medicines. If you have a medicine cabinet or box, then I suggest you keep it in a bedroom. If there are small children around, it might be wise to arrange to keep your medicines in a lockable box.

Please note that I consider that acquiring a supply of antibiotics and an EpiPen are the two most important things you can do to save your life or the life of a loved one.

Everyone in the world should have an EpiPen – it’s the effective way to deal with a huge allergy reaction or anaphylactic shock. It’s the easiest way to save a life. (I don’t get any kickbacks, by the way. I have no idea who makes the EpiPen, and I don’t care. It works.)

It’s especially important to have an EpiPen if you travel, if you live more than five minutes away from medical help or if you live in a country with inadequate health care (such as the UK). If you have an anaphylactic shock reaction, an EpiPen can save your life.

Our GP refused to prescribe an EpiPen (even though I’ve had an anaphylactic shock before – and I can promise you it isn’t fun), so I bought one online. It cost a biscuit short of £90 – more than half of one week’s old-age pension in the UK, but worthwhile.

The EpiPen contains adrenaline and is quite easy to use. You must read the instructions carefully but, basically, if you see someone having an anaphylactic shock reaction, you take the top off the pen and jab the needle part of the pen (which isn’t a pen at all) into the patient’s thigh. You just follow the instructions printed on the side of the pen. You can do this to yourself, of course. You can tell by looking at the pen if it has deteriorated and needs replacing. I am so convinced that the EpiPen is the one piece of equipment that can most easily be used to save a life that I am rarely more than a few feet away from mine.

Antibiotics are also essential. Sepsis is an increasingly common cause of death and governments recommend that anyone exhibiting signs or symptoms of sepsis should be given antibiotics within one hour. In countries where there is no reliable health care (such as isolated desert islands and the UK), this is unlikely to happen. Serious infections need to be treated quickly – usually within an hour or two of symptoms developing. It is the failure to treat infections speedily which may be one of the reasons why the incidence of sepsis has reached epidemic proportions. Sadly, many infections which could be treated effectively are not treated quickly enough, and patients die unnecessarily. GPs (whose working hours are similar to those of part-time librarians) now refuse to see patients at home either at night, at weekends or even during the working day. Many doctors refuse to see patients face to face, insisting on providing half-hearted and totally inadequate advice after a telephone or internet consultation. (It has been shown that patients who are “treated” this way are more likely to die.) Patients who are lucky enough to obtain a face-to-face appointment with a GP often have to wait several weeks to be seen – even in an emergency. (I wish I was joking, but I am not).

Of course, the real reason for not prescribing life-saving antibiotics is that restricting drug availability is part of the depopulation plan. The bottom line is that we all need to have access to antibiotics without needing a prescription. Unfortunately, in most countries, antibiotics are only available on prescription and doctors refuse to prescribe them appropriately. However, there are solutions. A bloke I met in a pub told me that he had obtained a supply of antibiotics for possible emergency use for himself or a member of his family by visiting a reputable online medical service which provided antibiotics for travellers. He told me, seemingly without shame, that he had filled in an online form saying that he would be travelling abroad and would need a supply of medicines to help deal with any emergency health problems. The medicines supplied included a well-known broad-spectrum antibiotic. Another man I met in a pub told me that he had obtained antibiotics for emergency use by telling an online doctor that he had a serious tooth infection when this was not true. These methods of obtaining antibiotics do involve some mild deceit, of course, and I would not dream of using either of these tricks. I feel sure that you too, dear reader, will feel the same way. But I mention these techniques merely as theoretical examples of what is happening in the world. (It is important, of course, to be careful when obtaining antibiotics or any other drugs online. There are many unscrupulous people around who will sell you fake drugs. Buy only from a registered and properly licensed source.)

In olden days, travellers used to consider it wise to take a supply of essential medicines with them when travelling abroad to what were known as Third World Countries. These days, people travelling to places such as Britain need to take a supply of essential medicines with them.

If you need a good first aid book (which you do), then I recommend ‘The Ship Captain’s Medical Guide’ which is published by the Maritime and Coastguard Agency in the UK and made available through The Stationery Office in the UK. It is the only really useful publication any government has ever produced and is intended primarily for use on vessels where there is no medical professional on board. It provides assistance and directions for crew members if it becomes necessary for them to assess and treat an illness or accident. I cannot stress too firmly that there will soon be no health care. The medical establishment has already decided that people must be left to die because of the (mythical) threat posed by global warming. It is, therefore, necessary for you to know how to look after yourself and those close to you.
