Experts Warns Meta That Its Pervert Glasses Will Enable Terrible Crimes

A coalition of civil rights and privacy groups is urging Meta to abandon reported plans to introduce facial recognition technology into its  smart glasses, warning the feature could pose serious risks to public safety and personal privacy.

More than 70 organizations signed onto a letter calling on the company to halt development of the tool, which would allow users to identify people in real time through wearable devices.

The concerns were first highlighted in reporting by Futurism, which cited growing backlash from advocacy groups and policymakers.

The coalition argues that embedding facial recognition into consumer  eyewear would fundamentally change how people move through public spaces.

In the letter, the groups describe the proposal as “a dangerous and reckless plan that will harm both users and the entire public,” emphasizing that the impact would extend even to individuals who do not use Meta’s products.

Critics say the technology could be exploited for harassment, stalking, or surveillance. They warn that the ability to instantly identify strangers could strip away anonymity in everyday settings, making it easier to track or target individuals without their knowledge.

The letter also raises concerns about consent. Because the  glasses would scan faces of people nearby, those individuals would have no practical way to opt in or out.

Advocacy groups argue that this creates a system where biometric data could be collected from bystanders without permission or awareness.

One passage from the coalition statement underscores the broader implications: “People should be able to move through their daily lives without fear that stalkers, scammers, abusers… are silently and invisibly verifying their identities.” The groups say this kind of persistent identification would reshape social norms and erode basic expectations of privacy.

The controversy comes amid reports that Meta has internally discussed launching such features, potentially under a system that could match faces with social media profiles.

While details remain unclear, previous reporting indicates the company has explored ways to limit the tool, such as restricting identification to users within its platforms.

Still, opponents argue that technical safeguards would not be enough. The coalition maintains that “preventing this outcome is not just a privacy preference,” but rather “a prerequisite for a free and safe society.”

Meta has not publicly confirmed a timeline for introducing facial recognition in its smart glasses, and the company has previously stated it is approaching such features cautiously. However, the growing backlash signals that any move in that direction is likely to face significant legal and regulatory scrutiny.
