Global markets at a glance

 

Asian shares were trading sluggishly on Wednesday following a flat finish on Wall Street, while concerns over opaque policy moves in China kept investors on edge amid a

drought of major economic data. Chinese share markets eased further after sharp falls on Tuesday, but the losses were relatively limited with Shanghai off 0.3 percent. Tokyo, the Nikkei 225 .225 pared early losses to be off just 0.1 percent, following a 1.4 percent gain on Tuesday.

 

Wall Street Update

 

U.S. stocks edged lower on Tuesday, easing back from record territory a day earlier as weak economic data offset gains in Home Depot (HD.N) and other retail shares. Seven

out of the 10 S&P 500 sector indexes ended lower, led by financials . The Dow Jones industrial average .DJI fell 27.48 points or 0.17 percent, to end at 16,179.66. The S&P

500 .SPX slipped 2.49 points or 0.13 percent, to finish at 1,845.12. The Nasdaq Composite .IXIC dropped 5.38 points or 0.13 percent, to close at 4,287.587.

• Wind turbine maker Suzlon Energy will seek shareholders’ approval for re-appointment of Tulsi Tanti as managing director of the company with an annual salary of Rs 3 crore. The company would also seek nod for pref-erential issue of shares certain entities and promoters.

• European mining shares ended lower in choppy trading on Tuesday as the sector absorbed a fresh knock from China, with weak corporate outlooks hurting companies such as Fresenius and Seadrill.

COMMODITY ROUNDUP

 

MCX Gold dropped today but the lows near Rs 30000 levels provided some support to the counter. COMEX Gold eased some profit taking emerged after the metal rallied near

four month highs yesterday after worries that Ukraine could plunge into a sovereign debt default and also on expectations that the weak data releases from US may reduce

the pace of QE windup. The metal quotes at $1333, down five dollars per ounce on the day. MCX Gold futures for April are trading at Rs 30106, down Rs 14 per 10 grams on

the day with 5.40% increase in the open interest.

 

CURRENCY ROUNDUP

 

The dollar index was at 80.169, after going as low as 80.016 on Tuesday with some traders pointing to mixed U.S. Data as a reason for its fall.

 

After going as low as 102.01 yen the previous day the dollar stood at 102.33 yen, well below a three-week high above 102.80 yen hit on Friday.
