This past week, we introduced a new theme within the world of GeoInvesting Skull Sessions: “You Make The Call.”  

In our November 4, 2024 morning email, when we introduced the concept, we explained our motivation like this. In case you missed that email here’s what these events are all about.

This event format is on an experimental basis, but we thought it’d be a good idea to bring in management teams from speculatively-viewed companies eager to present their business plans to us. While we recognize that the success rate for these kinds of ventures will not be high, we believe it would be valuable to hear potentially innovative ideas that may have a chance to bear fruit for investors. These sessions, should they continue to exist moving forward, will aim to broaden our awareness of emerging trends across industries and help us explore new business ideas that could be worth watching. And let’s not forget, it will only take one huge multi-bagger to make this endeavor worth it in the end. Time will tell.

The biggest hurdle for early-stage growth companies, from an investment perspective, isn’t simply determining whether they have a good business model. It’s assessing whether they can grow that business without destroying their capital structure by continually raising dilutive equity to cover losses on the path to (potential) profitability.

About Our Premium Morning Emails We send up to 5 premium morning emails per week. What we cover in these emails can vary, but as a rule of thumb, we try to keep members informed on our new and ongoing research and model portfolio actions related to stocks in our screens/portfolios and coverage universe. That means if there is a substantial contract, earnings, information arbitrage, Calls to Action, a new report, video replays, or anything else we deem as material to our stocks, we will include it in the email.

“You Make The Call” and The NFL

In case you were curious, the inspiration for this “due diligence theme” of our sessions arose from “You Make the Call“, a TV segment featured during NFL broadcasts in the 1980s and early 1990s, particularly on “Monday Night Football.” They presented viewers with controversial or complex plays from previous games, challenging them to act as referees and make the correct call. 

After a commercial break, the correct ruling was revealed, providing an engaging way for fans to learn about the rules of football.

Imagine if the NFL was still running that segment today. There’s no doubt that the last two weeks of controversial calls in the Bengals versus Ravens and Kansas City versus Tampa Bay would have been perfect “You make the call” segments.

“You Make The Call” and Investing

So why not parlay all this into investing? There’s a lot to learn, and much of that education can certainly come from the first-hand experience of digging into management’s qualifications and goals via interviews, right from the start. And we figured, if the NFL won’t bring back the engaging segment to sports fans, we’d at least bring a version of it to investing fans.

Our first brave company was one that is trying to make waves with what it believes is a differential solution to tackle a specific technical challenge in the shopping industry. As the story unfolds, we can track the Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) (revealed in the Skull Session) most critical to the company’s business model and progress. 

So far, the stock is up about 20% since our interview last week. 

By the way, we got a great overview of the importance of KPIs, as part of an investment research process, when we spoke with Quim Abril, the Founder of Draco Capital in August of 2022. Quim uses KPI metrics to aid in the valuation of the companies in which he invests, as explained in the Investors Insights session.
